I am going to Fire Island for the first time ever. Curious who all has been and can give me the 411, the DL, and the QT.
PMs welcome!

It is supposed to rain -- be sure to take your...um...rainjackets
Well, I'm not going until the 21st. But I will take...rainjackets...just in case.

I, for one, am one Manhattan Homo who has never been there (in the 14 years I've lived in this town) and never wanted to go. Everyone I know who goes there belongs to the party crowd - lots of superficial people who seem to live only to use drugs and have lots of indescriminate sexual encounters with nameless one-night stands, and usually they are people with lots of money and addictions. DISCLAIMER: I am not saying that this is true of everyone who goes there - just the people I've known over the years. I never had any desire to be around that crowd. I don't drink or smoke or use drugs and so I just don't feel as though I could possibly fit in. But I hear that it is absolutely beautiful out there in the right weather!
Once again the sagitarrian in me (blunt to the core) has taken over...LOL....
I spent my summers on the Pines each year during the mid 70's through the 80's. These were the best times of my life and I'll never forget them. They were the disco years. Life seemed to revolve around disco and I didn't mind a bit. Yes, there was drug taking and drinking-and I'll even go as far as to say that was part of the fun. We'd eat a late dinner, go to sleep for a few hours, then get up around one or two am, take drugs, and then go out dancing until around 6 am, then come home, take a dip in the heated pool then go to sleep.
Get up around noon, loll around the pool and go to the beach, maybe smoke pot, whatever, come home, change, go to tea, come home, have dinner, and start all over.
We were a bunch of close friends, gay men and straight women, who loved each other. We had nothing but laughs and none of us will ever forget a minute of it. Most of the guys are dead now, from AIDS. The rest of us are so glad to have the memories of our friends and photo albums to reflect on.
I have not done drugs or drank since the 80's and I don't miss it. It was all a part of my past.
These days I can only imagine the same kind of stuff is going on out there! I'm not telling you to do drugs at all, but have the time of your life!

I remember dancing on the beach there and all the ghosts of my dead friends joined me.
Oh wait, that was Long Time Companion. I've never actually been. I'm like Red, places that "everybody" goes to usually make me break out in hives. Like Provincetown. Yecccccccch.
Disclaimer: I'm all for indiscriminate sex, but what means this phrase "one night stand?" Do people spend whole entire NIGHTS with their tricks? Yecccccch.
I can assure you that I will not be smoking or doing drugs. I will be staying with an upstanding lesbian couple and their friends. I expect most of my time will be on the DL--enjoying the beach and resting.
HOWEVER, what's wrong with a little "indescriminate sexual encounters with nameless one-night stands"???? LOL I never have fit into the "scene" and do not expect I will there either, so don't worry, red. I will come back in one piece. :)
lol, Namo--sometimes you just spend the 5 - 15 minutes with them. A torrid affair is an hour or two. LOL
One of my favorite memories of Fire Island happened in the early 90's. A group was setting up for one of the dance fundraisers on the beach. The problem was they had started setting up at low tide and had set up some equiptment way beyond the tide mark. Anyways, as the tide started coming in, all of these brain dead, muscle studs started trying to set up a blockade against the water, as if a few towels and boxes would stop the Atlantic Ocean. They really couldn't understand why the water was moving up and why they couldn't stop it. Granted the majority of them were high on something. Still, It was the funniest thing I had ever seen.
Back in the day when I was there, the meatrack was the place to go for indiscriminate sex. It's like a little dark forest which separates the Pines from the Grove. Guys are hanging out there just waiting for others to come through, morning noon and night. At night you don't even see who you're with. I don't know why my male friends insisted on dragging me through it, but I did go a few times. I wonder if it's still popular.

I live 15 minutes from the ferries but rarely go there. I eschew promiscuity and drug taking.
You'll have to pick up the Fountains of Wayne CD and take it on your trip. (They are the band who sings "Stacy's Mom"). FOW have a song called "Fire Island" on the CD. It can help you create a "theme" for your weekend!
Namo: Ptown off-season is a magical place. I've even been there in November and it's wonderful.
It's not for me in August either but I would not write it off.
Fire Island can be relaxing too. It's what you make if. JRB, be yourself. Your eternal cuteness will have no problem finding Mr. Right Now if you want.
Remember, not everyone who goes there gets drunk, takes drugs and has wild group sex. Some of them stay in Manhattan and come to my place.
The Dame will be in P Town this August for carnival. Anyone ever done that?
Yup, I was there about 5 years ago. You'll have fun if you likes CROWDS.
Gay marriage starts in Massachusetts in 8 hours and Ptown will be an epicenter, since it is one of three Massachusetts towns which will allow out-of-state gays to marry. You should be overrun with the marrying kind as well as the usual single cruisers.
JRB, baby, you are invited over anytime you can pry yourself out of the sauna at New York Sports Club.
JRB,
You will have a blast in Fire Island. And the drug crowd sticks to itself. you will find the majority are into other fun things. ( and if encounters is what you are looking for; the drug crowd can't get it up anyway)
Ain't THAT the truth?? I mean what really IS the point?? LOL
JRB - I'm not worried about you - you seem like an intelligent guy with a good head on his shoulders - just be careful and enjoy yourself.

As Yogi once said, "The place is so crowded, nobody goes there."
