Farewell, Esther Williams

Posted: 6/6/13 at 1:24pmThat's so weird. Last night I was watching That's Entertainment III and when Esther Williams came on I looked her up to see if she was still alive. I feel like I'm somehow responsible for this.

It's because you touch yourself at night, PRS.
Such a great life she lead! I went to one of her birthday parties and ended up taking home the little diving board from her cake.
She was a very sweet woman.

Yes, a very sweet woman indeed. Years ago when I worked at The Century Plaza Hotel, she would come in quite frequently at dine at The Terrace Dining Room. After her meal was over with, she would always come up to the Concierge Desk to get change for her $10 or $20 so she could tip the valet. She'd always wait in the lobby for her car to come up, and chat for a bit with us. She got to know us all by name as she was a regular guest of the hotel.
When she wrote her autobiography, I went to a book signing that she did at Brentano's in Century City. It had been a few years since I had worked at the hotel, so I was going to reintroduce myself to her, but didn't need to, as she immediately remembered me and was so happy to see a familiar face. She was a class act all the way.

Well into her 70s she admitted to swimming a mile twice a day in her own backyard pool, nude, thank you very much.
One of the last of the great broads. This babe knew how to have fun.

Posted: 6/6/13 at 5:41pmI saw Jupiter's Darling when I was very young and just LOVED it. I kept trying to remember the name and my grandmother would tell me I was probably confused and that it was Neptune's Daughter. One of my first sessions online, at the library, on dial up, before Google, I searched for Esther Williams and scrolled through her films until I found the title. As luck would have it, the library had it on VHS to rent. I skipped class, stopped and bought microwave popcorn, Junior mints and sodas, drove to my Nana's house and we made an afternoon of it. That will always new one of my favorite films.
