Last night VH1 was repeating "Top 100 songs from the 1980s". I don't know who voted, but the Top 5 were not the best of the 80s. I know, I was there.
What should the Top 5 songs from the 80s be?
Do you have a link to the list?
Not best, but favorites that come to mind. Though I think some of the best music from the eighties came from some of the less popular bands like Nina Hagen, The Waitresses, The Motels, The Dead Kennedys, etc.
Take on Me - Ah HA
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
I confess - General Public
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads
Come on Eileen - Dexys Midnight Runners
With or Without you - U2
I can't pick just four. So here are some:
Take On Me - A-Ha
Duran Duran - Come Undone
Bobby Brown - Every Little Step
The Cure - Friday I'm In Love
Debbie Gison - Electric Youth
Seventh Avenue - No Mans Land
Tierra - Together
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
Two Of Hearts - Stacey Q
Don't You (Forget About Me) - Simple Minds
Sunglasses At Night - Corey Hart
Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
Blue Monday - New Order
The Goonies 'R' Good Enough - Cyndi Lauper
The Glamorous Life - Sheila E.
Land Of Confusion - Genesis
Call Me - Blondie
Power Of Love - Huey Lewis And The News
Cold Hearted - Paula Abdul
Practically the '80s:
Heartbreaker - Pat Benatar
some that scream 80's to me:
beach party vietnam - dead milkmen
nzai punks _ _ _ _ off - dead kennedys
blue monday - new order
in my head - black flag
beyond and back - x
Journey - Don't Stop Believing or George Michael - Faith!
1. With or Without You - U2
2. How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths
3. When Doves Cry - Prince
4. She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult

That's my list anyway.

VH1's Top 5 were:
1. Livin' on a Prayer - Bon Jovi
2. Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard
3. Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
4. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
5. When Doves Cry - Prince
My memory is that while Billie Jean was big because of the Moonwalk, Thriller was bigger because of how cool the video was.
Anything by
New Order
The Cure
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
echo on - How soon is Now - The Smiths
My fave 80s songs are:
1. Never As Good As The First Time - Sade
2. Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
3. When Doves Cry - Prince
4. I've Seen That Face Before (Libertango) - Grace Jones
5. Young Turks - Rod Stewart
Honorable mention:
Don't Stop Till You Get Enough - Michael Jackson, released in 79.
I know, it's hard to imagine I have a top 5 of the 80's with no Cure, New Order, Eurythmics, Pretenders, or Clash on it. I guess it wasn't that bad of a decade for music after all.
Scott took mine. As far as I'm concerned, "Don't Stop Believin'" is the definitive '80s song.
I remember seeing VH1's special back in August, seeing that they put Livin' On A Prayer" at the top andbeing really annoyed. Maybe that's just because I hate Bon Jovi. Then again, i wasn't really alive for the '80s, so...
Lest anyone forget, the 80s also brought us the artistry of Paula Abdul and Bobby Brown.
I didn't forget. Ok, well I did forget Paula. which is a HUGE oversight. *editing*
Have y'all heard her new song? It's surprisingly not bad, in an electronic-Britney-esque way.
I wasn't feeling the song. It was just the blurb on TMZ, right? Is there a full version?
i'll never ever hear or read the words bobby brown without thinking of zappa's classic bobby brown goes down.

HUMAN - The Human League
my favorite 80's song.
Actually, other than 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' I like the VH-1 choices.
'Thriller' is a better Michael Jackson song.
And I'd put in 'On the Metro' from Berlin, just because 'On the Metro' RULES.

Unfortunately, the list doesn't include any women. Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Bonnie Tyler, The Bangles. Couldn't they find one woman?
They have all of those women on the list, Goth. Some twice.
I have so many, but off the top of my head:
Walking on Sunshine-Katrina and the Waves
Don't You Want Me-Human League
Love is Alright Tonight-Rick Springfield
King of Pain-the Police
Hungry Like the Wolf-Duran Duran
Total Eclipse of the Heart-Bonnie Tyler
Holiday-Madonna
Money For Nothing-Dire Straits
The Breakup Song-Greg Kihn Band
Let's Go Crazy-Prince and the Revolution
Eyes Without a Face-Billy Idol
It's the End of the World-REM
Billie Jean-Michael Jackson
Geez, I could go on and on. I'm an 80s nut.
OH and the best video of the 80s is "When The Rain Begins to Fall" by Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora.
