my favourite? that's like asking "what's your favourite movie with a lady in it?" i mean, all the movies i watch on tcm or rent are b&w. so if you're asking what's my favourite b&w i've watched this week: east of eden, the apartment, strangers on a train, the maltese falcoln, bringing up baby, roman holiday...
and every movie made by hitchcock, audrey hepburn, katharine hepburn, and nearly everything from the '40's, esp film noir.

"The Night of the Hunter" is a remarkable film, with especially haunting shots of the children floating down the river at night, and wonderful performances by Lillian Gish and Robert Mitchum.

This is a very difficult question, I agree...cause most of my favorite movies are B&W!

If I had to choose one, it would be "From Here To Eternity".

A few more honorable mentions:

The Night Of The Iguana
How Green Was My Valley
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Last Picture Show
Jezebel
Holiday
The Awful Truth

Isn't it?? I love how even when you can't see the actual color, you KNOW just how red Bette Davis's dress is, and why everyone is so shocked...What a great moment, and what a great movie.

A few were mentioned so I won't repeat those.

Gilda is absolutely fantastic, though. "Put The Blame On Mame" is very close to perfect.
