re: Favorite Bible stories

Speaking of Queen Esther, there is an annual Purim Spiel done at the Triad in NYC, featuring Broadway Performers. They use old showtunes with new lyrics - sort of a "Forbidden Broadway" version of the Purim story.

re: Favorite Bible stories

I can't believe I missed this thread on Favorite Bible Stories. I must have been sleeping last November. Here it is in all its glory.
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: Favorite Bible stories

My favorite is when God destroyed that city full of homos.

Ok, just kidding. I think the most moving moment of the Bible is, for me, the Garden of Gethsemane. A testament to the duality of Jesus: his humanity and his godliness.

I always loved reading The Parables. Particularly The Lost Sheep, The Mustard Seed and The Good Samaritan.

And, I love The Shepherd Psalm.

re: Favorite Bible stories

My favorite from the New Testament is the story of Jesus as a child getting left behind in the Temple. That Mary and Joseph didn't beat the crap out of that boy after he scared them like that (complete with a smart-aleck come back) is surely a sign of their holiness.

An endearing, human look at the holy family.

I like the story of how God created everything. I just like the reassurance that no matter what is going on, He is always in control. It also helps put things into perspective. When I get stressed and realize that nothing is going the way I planned and I feel like I HAVE to get all this stuff done, its nice to realize that even God took seven days. If God can take His time with things, then who am I to feel like I have to do everything now?

re: Favorite Bible stories

I personally take great comfort in all the references in the New Test. to the times when Jesus denounces the hyprocacy of the religious leaders of the day and chooses instead to hang out with the drunks and the whores. A section of the Bible that many extreme righties would do well to read a bit more carefully.

I also love the story of Mary, and admire her courage... she allowed herself to be looked down upon by society, being pregnant before she married Joseph AND not with his child, and had AMAZING faith, and carried a child who changed the world forever. So many strong women - Rahab, Ruth, Esther, Mary... and some with very checkered pasts, interestingly enough.

re: Favorite Bible stories

Great thread! Hard to choose. Among my favorites are those that have already been mentioned, like the story of Joseph; Esther; David and Goliath, etc. I also love Jesus blessing the children, and the story of the woman "caught in adultery" (John re: Favorite Bible stories.

Interesting thing about the book of Esther that distinguishes it from other biblical books is that God is not mentioned at all in the text, yet is present in the faith and determination of Esther, Mordecai and the Jewish people.
