Favorite Bible stories

I am taking a class in the Book Of Esther at my synagogue. We usually read this at Purin so studying at another time of the year puts a whole new perspective on it. Any other favorites from the Good Book?

re: Favorite Bible stories

I'm really not religious, but since I go to a Catholic school, I know tons of stories. My favorite story has always been the Ester story (such a coincidence that you mentioned it!!). Ester is one tough girl in the bible, when there's always stories about men. I also love the Joseph story (well, part of why I love it is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), but I think it's really fascinating with the whole dream-telling concept.
I have my books and my poetry to protect me...

It's rarely pointed out that had it not been for Esther, the Jewish race would have been nearly wiped out. But don't forget the other great women of the Bible such as Ruth, Hannah and Rahab. (For Christians, only God could design a plan where His Son came from ancestry that consisted of kings and harlots).

One of my favorite stories is David & Goliath. One small stone properly placed can finish the job that thousands couldn't accomplish.

My favorite story is David and Jonathan. If anyone doubts there were gay people in the Bible, read this story. It's plain as day.

Uh oh...let's see if my southern bible belt raising can remember this correctly. Shadrack, Meshack, and Abendego are thrown into the fiery furnace for not bowing down to the king. But they don't burn. And then, the guards notice a mysterious fourth person, Jesus, walking around in the furnace.

David was married to many many women. Not the least of which being Bathsheba, whom he had an adulterous affair with after seeing her bathe naked and then killed her husband. Yeah. Sure. He was gay. Plain as day.
The story of David and Jonathan is a beautiful one becuase it's about deep and abiding FRIENDSHIP. And because that rarely exists among hetero males, most being too macho to admit ANY sort of platonic love for another. I'm not one. I have a lot of friends that I love. re: Favorite Bible stories
My favorite story is Job. It reminds me who's REALLY in control of things. re: Favorite Bible stories

re: Favorite Bible stories

BB...is there not a third possibility of David being bisexual? I'm clued into the gay thing when the Bible says their love "surpassed that of women", and then they immediately have a ceremony which parallels EXACTLY the cultural marriage ceremony of the day. Then, of course, David removes his robe, and they kissed one another until David "exceeded." I'm not sure it's a totally ignorant idea, myself. Perhaps it goes against the norm of evangelical hatred of homosexuality, but...as we all know, evangelicals don't know crap about the Bible. =)

Okay so maybe David was bi...he rfers to his love for Jonathan as greater than his love for women..

Either way, I always liked Jonah. after the whole big fish story. He preaches damnation to Ninevah. City repents. He gets mad because he wanted to see the city get destroyed. God teaches him a lesson by letting this gourdplant provide him shade. then the gourd plant withers up. Jonah gets pissed and is all like "God, why did you kill my plant" And God says "you cry over a plant, but you want to see a whole nation killed" Jonah learns a lesson about compassion and mercy.

I also love the brief two verses in Genesis on my favorite Biblical dude -- Enoch. He walked with God, and then was no more, for God took him. How bizarre. The dude didn't die, he just got taken to be with God. Makes me think that maybe that's what death is -- we walk with God here, and then we are no more -- because we go to be with God. Like the play "Wit" suggests, maybe death is just a breath -- a comma. Only a comma between life and life everlasting.

re: Favorite Bible stories

I find that MOST Christians don't know crap about the Bible because they don't understand or have any sort of grounding in Judaism. They need to go study at a synagogue every month or so. The book is put together SO perfectly that learning more about the Torah informs what Jesus did and who he actually was. But, most Christians are VERY New Testament centric. They don't want to look at the big picture. It's much easier when it's just the story of Jesus.

B.B., I agree with you completely that Christians should take the time to study Judaism. The parts of it that I've studied are amazing in opening my eyes to what Jesus was saying and doing! However, the Christians that I know don't know how to approach Jews and ask for help to get understanding. And I think they feel that the Jews aren't willing to help them.

This past Shabbat we read the binding of Isaac. This story never ceases to amaze me. Abraham is told to kill his son and acts on faith in G-d. I think it is truly amazing.

Can I also just say, even though I personally don't do it, that I find the way that Jews don't put the O in G-D very charming. It's just a very small yet deferring gesture that's absolutely beautiful. Would that more Christians had the same humility. Not that I'm saying we should start leaving out the O. It is, after all, the thought that counts. re: Favorite Bible stories

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

re: Favorite Bible stories

B.B. Iwas raised to leave the O out of G-d because we are not supposed to write that name out in full if it might have the potential to be erased or thrown out. That is why prayer books are never thrown out but buried with people.

What a neat thread, Grovers Corners! :)

My favorite story is still the first few books of Genesis, and the story of Creation. There are so many interpretations, it is fascinating to me! I just finished reading "God is a Verb" (Kabbalah) and it made me realize how, being raised a Christian, very little true EDUCATION I've received about the Judeo-Christian faith.

Oh no! Pet peeve surfacing!

It's the book of REVELATION. No S. Saying "Revelations" has become so incredibly common and it just grates me every time I hear it.

I'm a fan of the story of Jonah. It's just got some major humor factor in it. I also really like the story of Moses. And ESTHER! Ooh, most definitely. She is one kick-butt queen.
