Posted: 10/30/07 at 5:29pmOk, give me some good Chinese Restaurants in Manhattan. I'm tired of paying $11 for bland Chinese.

Well, if you go down to Chinatown, chances are the food will be much better. I usually go to Wo Hop on Mott. The average price for a dish which serves about 4 is around $3-5.
I'd like to know a good Chinese restaurant that's NOT in chinatown, though.

Chin Chin: 216 E 49th St between 2nd and 3rd.
This place is INCREDIBLE. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth every penny (and I don't spend money on ANYTHING so that is saying something). It is actually very affordable if you go with a group (and they bring out extra appetizers and drinks).

I'm trying to think of the place in midtown, not to far from the Hyatt. The name fails me, but it's yummy--very well done westernized Chinese food in a nice setting. Great beef. And those crisy fried noodles and mixed vegetables. Definitely not Chinatown cheap though.
Big Wong's is great for their Hong Kong style barbeque meat, congee, and they have good noodles too. Really cheap for all the food you get. My favorite dim sum place is right across the street from the police precint. The name fails me. Then there's a really good noodle shop that serves great braised duck and tofu.
For straight up take out, I really like the place right across the street from LaGuardia HS. The take out places by my home use to rock, but now they suck.

Which one? The one on Amsterdam Avenue has been known to give people food poisoning, and the only other one is the fancy one on Broadway. There used to be an amazing one down the block and across the street from the "food poisoning" one, but that closed last year.

Posted: 10/30/07 at 9:46pmI recommend the Vegetarian Dim Sum House, which is self-explanatory, and on Pell St. between Bowery and Mott. it's delicious and cheap.

1. Best atmosphere only go there if you are rich.
Shun Lee- My favorite chinese on a date or expense account. (It is by far the best atmosphere and service)
2. The Cottage- Worst service. Best prices. Terrible waitstaff but great portions of delicious chinese food with free wine.
I go at least once a week and they still don't know my name.
The food is great so I ignore the bad, horrendous way they treat me. PS. They treat women the worst. I tip over 23 percent and it makes no difference. The food is incredible and you can have a scrumptious meal with free wine for less than $16.00.
West 76th. Amsterdam.
3. Mee- West 54th/9th
Excellent and cheap midtown chinese. Best value in Times Square the only negative is the one smelly bathroom that has such a foul odor it almost made me pass out. It made me worry about the kitchen.(1 BATHROOM for men and women and there was pee on the floor) Gross environment but the food was as good as the Cottage and the service there was better. Avoid the bathroom at all costs. It smelled like the subway tracks in August actually worst bathroom I have encountered in NYC.
My favorite is Shun Lee but I can afford The Cottage.

CoCo. COCO. Do you even think about what you are writing? Let us imagine you are talking about a MAN and not a restaurant. Now instead of food you are talking about SEX. Now, reread the above post. Free liquor, great sex, he treats you like ****, he doesn't know your name, you keep throwing money at him extravagantly, it pisses you off that he treats women so poorly, BUT YOU KEEP GOING BACK!
Now, ask yourself again why you are single.
Please take this thread to your therapist next week. I am sure he (yes, I am pretty sure you would insist on a male shrink) will be able to help you read between the lines.

It is not sex. It is great food. I'm a foodie!
PS The Cottage is the best affordable chinese on the UWS.
I am unique, I like to make friends with the places I dine.
One reason I never stop going to Raku. Ray treats everyone like family.
I go to Raku for the great sushi and the nice service. They treat everyone like gold at Raku.

And THIS is why you will never be PAID to be a food critic. Do you think ANYONE will recall what you said about the food? You could have attended the last supper and all you could talk about is Jesus's nasty hair and B. O.

Single? Sue, doll. What does my personal single life have anything to do with chinese food. I was trying to help this poster.
I have been a member of NYC and Co for many years. I produced two tv shows about dining in NYC and have a website about it.
I am an authority on food. ESPECIALLY, ASIAN.
My single life has nothing to do with it.
PS It is none of your business. Talk about a thread jack.
If I don't care about being single (AND I ENJOY IT) why do you?

I think most people would be grossed out by Mee's bathroom.
PS: This is a message board. I am not posting a review of a restaurant. I was trying to help the man.

PS I did make a very good living reviewing restaurants for two tv shows. So, again you are wrong.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't eat in a restaurant where the bathroom is that foul, no matter how good the food tastes or how friendly the waiters are. It's not like the staff has different facilities. Think about who is preparing the food. And I'm guessing THEY have to use the bathrooms from time to time. Gross.
And in fairness to Sueleen, you have been know to frequently lament your single status publicly. Not that there is anything wrong with being single... I'm just saying that once you've made something an issue, you shouldn't be surprised that it's become fair game for comment.
