It's totally up to you if you wish to provide the how's and why's (or not). But, please list your personal faves thru the years. I'll start.

* Johnny Carson
* Billy Crystal
* Whoopi Goldberg (3 out of 4 yrs b/c one year she stunk up the place)
* John Stewart
* Ellen Degeneres

NOTE: I don't remember Bob Hope as host but several family members still consider him the gold standard.

Bob Hope had good one-liners. He was a one-liner comedian, he knew the art form. But his material played well for his personality and for the time period. He didn't have to appear in his underwear to get ratings.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Best: Carson, Hope, Crystal, and Goldberg.

Worst: Letterman, Harris, Franco.

Hands down, Steve Martin (or, as it was the last time he hosted, Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin). He always had the best writers and his smarmy, oblivious "Hollywood" Steve Martin persona never fails to make me laugh. In fact, I wish they'd bring him back. I mean, this was perfect...

Carson could do it in his sleep. He made it look ridiculously easy

Whoopi & Crystal were great. Ellen was OK as was Steve Martin

Worst: Franco, Letterman & NPH

Billy Crystal. I don't remember Carson, but I'd probably put him before Crystal if i saw Carson do it.
