Favorite Poem

I could have sworn there was a thread on this but I searched and couldn't find one. My current favorite poem is The Triumph of Charis. (Note: Do not post the poem in its entirety if it is not in the public domain. I'd hate to see this thread get deleted.) This poem is just so beautiful. We are doing this poem set to music by Vaughn Williams and it is just gorgeous! Oh and please try to be mature! Favorite Poem

The Triumph of Charis.
By Jonson, Benjamin .

See the chariot at hand here of Love,
Wherein my lady rideth!
Each that draws is a swan or a dove,
And well the care love guideth.
As she goes, all hearts do duty
Unto her beauty;
And enamoured, do wish, so they might
But enjoy such a sight,
That they still were to run by her side,
Through swords, through seas, whither she would ride.

Do but look on her eyes; they do light
All that Love's world compriseth!
Do but look on her hair; it is bright
As Love's star when it riseth!
Do but mark, her forehead's smoother
Than words that soothe her!
And from her arched brows, such a grace
Sheds itself through the face,
As alone there triumphs to the life
All the gain, all the good, of the element's strife.

Have you seen but a bright lily grow,
Before rude hands have touched it?
Ha' you felt the wool o' the beaver?
Or swan's down ever?
Or have smelt o' the bud o' the brier?
Or the nard in the fire?
Or have tasted the bag o'the bee?
O so white, O so soft, O so sweet is she!

Ok now what is your current favorite?

Invictus

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit, from pole to pole
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud
Under the bludgeonings of chance,
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how straight the gait
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul.

W.E Henley

Always my favorite, probably always will be...

Sonnet #43, From the Portuguese

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints!---I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!---and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

--For Love's Sake

Seize the moment
For love's sake
Before it's too late
At the moment of enlightenment
Painful confessions
Seem more important than ever
Some things should not be predicted
We have much to say to each other
Just as the roof caves in

My very favorite poem is The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost. It is has even been set to music and is quite beautiful. My other favorite poem is The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus. It appears on the base of the statue of Liberty and has also been set to music.

Quiet Girl, Langston Hughes

I would liken you
To a night without stars
Were it not for your eyes.
I would liken you
To a sleep without dreams
Were it not for your songs.

The Dream Keeper, Langston Hughes

Bring me all of your dreams,
you dreamers,
Bring me all your heart melodies,
that I may wrap them in a blue cloud cloth,
Away from the too rough fingers of the world
I sing for myself. I sing when I want, whenever I want to, just for me. I sing for my own pleasure. Do you understand that?

re: Favorite Poem

This is one of my favorite poems. I usually think of it when someone close to me has died and it brings me a lot of comfort.

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she let my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

William Shakespeare's "Sonnet 71"

No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Then you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world, with vilest worms to dwell:
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it; for I love you so
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
O, if, I say, you look upon this verse
When I perhaps compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse.
But let your love even with my life decay,
Lest the wise world should look into your moan
And mock you with me after I am gone.

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost:

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay

Very short and sweet. The Outsiders had a big impact on me...re: Favorite Poem

Death Be Not Proud by John Donne

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.
If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to. -Dorothy Parker

Yenta, what is your source of information? "Where The Bee Sucks There Suck I" is from A MIDDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. I usually teach it to my Junior classes along with "I Have A Noble Cock", that lovely Middle-English poem written by Anonymous.

The class is usually howling with laughter during that lesson.

My favorite poem is Is It Crazy To Want To Unravel, by Wendy Rose.

My role-model sent it to me when I was going through a rough time in my life, and I am now using it for one of my forensics pieces. I love it!

IS IT CRAZY TO WANT TO UNRAVEL
-- Wendy Rose

like a dandelion gone to seed,
leaving nothing behind but a dent
or not even that to touch or burn
or remember.
This is the way
winter begins--
with the angry moth
who grips the window screen
and freezes into an opal.
Well, that's one way to go-
just get harder.

Or I could dissolve
as disobedient women do in the Bible
their solemn salt hands still pointing
to the pleasures of sin.

I could evaporate or liquefy
or become dust or turn sideways
before a funhouse mirror
to become a needle
becoming nothing

I could scream so mightily
that only sound would survive.
(BIG PAUSE)
I could cry myself dry,
be sifted by the desert wind
that burns my summer golden hills.

Or I could fly apart
and watch my whirling blood
form galaxies in the air,
spatter on the men
who hammer to death
the trees and remark
that a woman just
was standing there
and now
poof she is gone.

"The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I have my books and my poetry to protect me...

Annabel Lee by Mr. Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

She was a child and I was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love --
I and my Annabel Lee --
With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud by night
Chilling my Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me:
Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud, chilling
And killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we --
Of many far wiser than we --
And neither the angels in Heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee,
And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the side of the sea.

This week Im reading Christina Rossetti. I really like Goblin Market but its a long poem and I don't feel like typing it all up so this one's not a favourite but its worth a read at this time of day

Sleeping at last by Christina Rossetti

Sleeping at last, the trouble and tumult over,
Sleeping at last, the struggle and horror past,
Cold and white, out of sight of friend and of lover,
Sleeping at last.

No more a tired heart downcast or overcast,
No more pangs that wring or shifting fears that hover,
Sleeping at last in a dreamless sleep locked fast.

Fast asleep. Singing birds in their leafy cover
Cannot wake her, nor shake her the gusty blast.
Under the purple thyme and the purple clover
Sleeping at last.

need to defrag my brain.

Metaphors
by Sylvia Plath

I'm a riddle in nine syllables.
An elephant, a ponderous house,
A melon strolling on two tendrils.
O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers!
This loaf's big with its yeasty rising.
Money's new-minted in this fat purse.
I'm a means, a stage, a cow in calf.
I've eaten a bag of green apples,
Boarded the train there's no getting off.

(NOTE: No, I'm not pregnant. I just happen to like the poem.)
I starred in a short film called Magnetic Personality. Check it out!

"I Got Stung By A Bee"
by Shel Silverstein

I got stung by a bee
I won't tell you where
I got stung by a bee
I was just lying there.
It tattooed a message
I can't let you see
That spells out...
"Hello you've been stung by a bee."

It has sentimental value. My first boyfriend read it to me and we were 7.
Like a firework unexploded
Wanting life but never knowing how

I can't limit it to one, so I'll just say the collected works of Walt Whitman and Dr. Seuss.
