I have been cast in Beauty and the Beast as Lumiere. Here's the thing, im having trouble trying to really get into character, because my director wants me to play the role as a girl, because i am a girl and he wants me to have a pretty costume (YAY). If anyone has any tips/comments/suggestions, please let me know!

Talk to your director about playing Lumiere as a boy.

Tell your director to pick a different show. That role is iconic. Don't change it.

I have never been in a position like this, but I'm going to have to say just role with it. Sure, the character is iconic, and I'm sure if I had that big of a role I would feel tons of pressure to make it as great as the male Lumiere everyone knows and loves. Role with it in that you make it your own ORIGINAL character. Think of adorable, clever little things that YOUR Lumiere can do to make people leave the auditorium and think "Wow, she really pulled that off." Don't ever show any sign that you aren't confident in the role, even if you are, because then people can see that you weren't feeling the role. Just let it be about what the character brings to the show and how you can shine with even difficult roles! :) Break a leg!

I realize that this is a little late to be responding, but how did you handle the romantic stuff between Lumiere and Babette?
