I second (third?) Liza.
Celia Cruz should've won one as well, but she died before they realized it.
Liza for sure.
Paul McCartney
Mel Brooks
Mick Jagger
Not quite yet, but:
Stephen Spielberg
George Lucas
Alan Menken
Tommy Tune
I'm not sure about George Lucas but I'm pretty sure Stephen Spielberg is already on the list.
According to that Wiki list, he ain't.
Last year? 2006.

SupMom - it's traditionally the day after Christmas, but I'm not sure about this year.
Thanks for the info- can't wait to watch. Always a top-notch television program! mom
Robert Joffrey should be given this award even though he died in 1988.
Glebby - They didn't give the KCH to Irving Berlin because he was too frail to travel to Washington to accept the award from the President at the White House. The KC was MAJORLY criticized for it so he was added in for a special honorary tribute when Reagan was in the WH.
I got so fed up with the politics at play in the awarding of those 'honors' that they lost a lot of appeal for me.
Go back and recognize those who so richly deserved it and have since passed away? It won't ever happen. After all, how much publicity can the president get from that?
When one thinks of some of the ballet names that have received the Kennedy Center Honors Award it's hard to believe that nothing has been done about Robert Joffrey.
The event has gotten so big visiting companies can't have the big studio for class at Nutcracker time.

Mamie - I understand that there's politics involved - where isn't it these days?
But, this is an instance of this country recognizing artistic contribution - which is NOT the norm. As long as they continue the program, I'll hope for the best - and for people to be made aware.
It has been my understanding that Doris Day has not been honored, because she has stated she would not attend the ceremony. You must attend to be honored; but, nobody deserves it more. I wish she would reconsider, before it's too late. Otherwise, I'd rather see Dick Van Dyke and Jerry Hermann, over anyone of the people, this year. I find this crop rather dull.

JohnBoy - I didn't react too well to this year's lineup, either. Except for Steve Martin, whose contributions to the arts go way beyond the 'wild and crazy guy' thing.
I wonder what Doris' reasoning is? I know Katherine Hepburn refused to be honored during a Republican administration. I'd be interested to know what Ms. Day's thinking is.
How ridiculous of Hepburn. What does the administration have to do with anything?! The people are selected by members of a committee, that has absolutely nothing to do with politics. Was she ever honored? I don't remember.
Oh, and I've heard that Day has a major fear of flying. Naturally, I've no idea if that's true.

Yes, she accepted during Clinton's admin. And while the committee may work independently, the award is given from the country at that given moment - so the president is very much a part of the proceedings (even the current one, who couldn't look any more bored during the event if he tried.)
Yes, she accepted during Clinton's admin.
DG, according to the link on the first page of this thread, Hepburn was an honoree in ’90.
