Just returned from seeing a new movie called Youth
It stars Michael Caine,Harvey Keitel. Rachel Weisz and Jane Fonda. Beautifully written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino whose 2013 foreign film The Great Beauty was a treat and won both a Oscar and Golden Globe as Best Foreign Film. A wonderful character study with Caine's best role in a while and a small but vital role by Fonda
Definitely recommend it.

I want to see it.
Sneaking in amid the fanfare for popcorn movies and prestige year-end artistic fare. Why didn't they release this in, say, August, when the marketplace was so lacking in adult (boomer) fare? You'd think they might've pulled a "Marigold Hotel" and found a really willing niche audience in late summer. December is a terrible time to push this, as the awards season is already crowded. I don't understand these decisions. It's playing in a suburban NYC town 5 miles from mine.
That is the $64,000 question. Beats me
The December release is purely to boost its Oscar prospects. Critics really responded to it and the distributor is running a good campaign for Jane Fonda and screenplay to get nominated. The film might have found an audience in August, but it would have been most likely forgotten by awards season with much splashier films following. Now, it stands out for not being a super typical awards contender.
Love Sorrentino's other work (I must be the only person who liked This Must Be the Place), so I'm very excited for this.
See The Great Beauty on DVD and this in the cinema
I have seen The Great Beauty. It's problematic in that it's intentionally derivative of movies that it could never be as good as (mostly La Dolce Vita), but I really did like it. Il Divo is also very good.
Saw it today at Roxy's recommendation. Hard to formulate short thoughts about it. Definitely loved it, thought that the use of images and music was amazing. Cast was mostly great, though Paul Dano stuck out like a sore thumb. Hard to say what didn't work, though the movie worked more on a visceral sense than a dramatic sense.
Dano was indeed kind of meh.Enjoyed the movie as a whole.Glad you enjoyed it. What did you think of Fonda's hands?
The way the movie shows skin (i.e.: Michael Caine getting massaged, miss universe, Jane Fonda's hands) was extraordinary.
Oh you meant like the fact that she's getting old. Well, if I'm not mistaken it happens to people who live to be a certain age.
I know but I am just surprised if she did not see the footage that she did not ask it be cleaned up a bit. If we are lucky, we all get to be her age and generally look as well as she does. It was just a bit of a shock is all.
Just came back from seeing this. Great, great, great recommendation, Roxy! This film was for me. I got a lot out of it, and will be thibking about it for a long time. I mean, what can I say...Harvey and Michael, Rachael and all of them were superlative. The "cow symphony" was hilarious. Not for those who like super easy films. This takes imagination, open mindedness, and attention to subtle details to really appreciate the art of this film. And that STUNNING ending (the singer!). Holy cow.
Forgot all about the Cow sequence . Glad you enjoyed it. Was it me or did Keitel look like Geraldo Rivera?
Nooooooo! Harvey does NOT look like Geraldo. Michael Caine s gonna be on 60 Minutes in a few minutes!
I missed Caine
I liked the part of the women on the hill with Keitel. Cannot believe a guy coming out of the movie saying it was the worst piece of **** he had ever seen in his life.
Oh well, no accounting for taste or lack thereof.Same happens on Broadway.
Yeah....I went to a 3pm show and all the annoying uws yentas with their walkers announced loudly during the credits roll that the film was a boring pretentious piece of ****. Lol. Oy vey. To each his own.
I have seen many a pretentious movie in my day and Youth was not one of them.
Like last wk i saw "The Big Short". Hated it. "Prententious bore", imho (for me). Everybody else seems to love it. Oh well.....
That's the way it goes sometimes. Many times, the better the reviews are the more the film goes in the crapper.Liked the explanation of life Keitel has by the stationary binoculars on the lookout point. Cinematography here at least deserves a nomination.
Life goes on.

Another film you should see is The Danish Girl. Going in, I really knew nothing about the subject of the film only that he was one of the first people to undergo a sex change. Had me at the beginning and never let go,. Also, another Oscar nomination for Eddie Redmayne . IMO, he was sensational. it. .
The Danish Girl was terrible. Tacky, boring, and downright offensive. Eddie Redmayne cried for 2 hours and apparently that means he's worthy of an award.
