So maybe the question is really: why are so many roles in American films going to foreign actors?
I may be slow on the take, but I just realized that Cate Blanchett is the first actress (or actor) in the history of the Oscars to be nominated for playing the same character in two different films. (both Elizabeth movies)
That's never happened before!
...and before you bitches start snarking on her Elizabeth: The Golden Age nomination, see the movie first. She's fantastic in it, and really surprised me. I was expecting recycled royalty, or a cliched turn. Far from it. I actually think if she hadn't played the part in the first film, she would have been a front-runner to win the award this year. She's THAT good in it. And the movie is much better than I heard it was. It's every bit as good as the first film.
Still, a "new record" was set by Ms. Blanchett this year.
Best12Bars, what about Bing Crosby and Al Pacino?

Peter O'Toole was nominated for playing Henry II in LION IN WINTER and BECKET.
Well, that was dumb. The person who pointed it out to me said "actress," which is true.
But there HAVE been male actors who have done this before, as you all have mentioned.
I stand corrected!
She's the first lady-person.
