Final word - Only 3 animated Oscar contenders this year.

I actually enjoyed Cars. It really was more action and fluff than the typical Pixar flick, but I thought it was fun.

Speaking of Cars, there is a cute Cars ride at Disney Studios in Paris. It's essentially no more than a modified Scrambler ride, but the way they constructed it with all the cars on little roads and all moving parts hidden out of sight underneath is really impressive. It truly resembles little animated cars zipping along streets at high speeds barely missing each other.

Pixar is working on other stuff including Brad Bird's live-action movie about the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake still in early development. They also have something up called Brave that is some sort of fairytale blend of Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm set in Scotland, in computer-animation of course.

MAJOR BUMP, but they are going back to having five films nominated. I wish they would've had five last year so "Tangled" would've gotten a nomination. Here are the films that have been submitted:

Alois Nebel
Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
Arthur Christmas
Cars 2
A Cat in Paris
Chico & Rita
Gnomeo & Juliet
Happy Feet Two
Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil
Kung Fu Panda 2
Mars Needs Moms
Puss in Boots
Rango
Rio
The Adventures of Tintin
The Smurfs
Winnie the Pooh
Wrinkles

They're gonna pull five nominees out of that list? Quantity does NOT equal quality. I know that's their rule, but there are going to be some embarrassing choices, just based on the edict of having to fill five slots.

Kung Fu Panda 2 is wonderful. The first one was not at all what I expected and it has become one of my favorite animated films. The second expands on the charms of the first and is not only fun, but quite touching. And the animation is GORGEOUS. I didn't like Rango at all.

I loved Rango and I could see it in the final 3. But I think Kung Fu Panda 2, Winnie the Pooh (Disney knows Cars 2 was just a money grab and pushing for their hand-drawn animated film would make up for the poor marketing they did for the movie), and The Adventures of Tin Tin are the final 3.

Hugo is not animated though the trailer seemed like another world.

I can see the list being:

Rango
Kung Fu Panda 2
Winnie the Pooh
Puss in Boots
Adventures of Tintin

Happy Feet 2 and Arthur Christmas are the wild cards if the end up being exceptional.
