I just went out back and my backyard is filled with fireflies! I've never seen them before (Well, except for the one's in the Pirates of the Carribean at Disneyland) so I was a little freaked when I caught flashes of light out of the corner of my eye.
They are amazing to just sit and watch!
Just wanted to share!

TheatreDiva, don't be saying things that are going to make me like you.
Fireflies are amazing - when I lived in Virginia they flew up so high into the trees and were so bright I thought they were moving stars until I figured out what they were.
What a really nice post. Thanks for sharing.

Posted: 6/25/05 at 12:44amOddly, I had just been thinking about how I rarely see them where I live. They were everywhere when I was growing up in Ohio. Truly, they are one of life's little pleasures!

Posted: 6/25/05 at 12:46amBugs freak me out. I don't know why. I used to LOVE spiders, let them crawl all over my hands, used to play with my cousin's tarantula, etc. I could smush bugs with eaaasssse, but now, I just run from little itty bitty gnats, bees, flies, anything. I can't kill them either. Sometimes I will, but I can't "clean" them up. I hate...how they move. And I hate what they look like. Guh. I used to love fireflies, too, now they just freak me out. ::shudders::

ok, well then, that's ONE thing you can put on my list of reasons i LIKE georgia. we do have lots of nice fireflies in the backyard ... only we call them LIGHTNIN BUGS down here
#7re: Fireflies!
Posted: 6/25/05 at 12:15pmActually, I grew up calling them lightning bugs, too! We never called them fireflies - just picked that up recently. We weren't from the south, though. My family and all my relatives were from New York. They don't have lightning bugs in Ireland, do they?

During the summer, as a kid I used to ALWAYS play with/catch fireflies...hmm, I miss that!

Lightning Bugs huh?
I was born and raised in Southern CA, so I hardly even saw stars at night. And the closest thing I've even see to fireflies was on the Pirates Of the Carrabean ride at Disneyland. So this is totally cool for me.
It's like a special effect come to life in my own back yard.
Now, if I can just keep my cats from eating them....

I can just imagine your cat's eyes lighting up because they ate too many fireflies...

i remember really NASTY kids used to pinch their blinkers off and smear the phosphorescent goop on their faces. it was so gross and very cruel, i thought

Posted: 6/26/05 at 8:18pmWhere I live, in northern NJ, we have lots of lightning bugs or fireflies, since both names are used around here. They seem to love our herb garden that takes up part of the backyard. They swirl around through the plants, blinking, then darting up into the mulberry tree, then down. I never really think it's summer until they arrive. Thanks for bringing up the subjec, TheatreDiva.

Posted: 6/26/05 at 8:21pmI used to love seeing the fireflies at Wolf Trap, especially when we were dancing "The Dream" (A Midsummer Night's Dream).

Posted: 6/26/05 at 9:00pmSome fireflies snuck inside last night and the cats went wild - I was able to safely usher the fireflies back outside, though. And Glebb, we go to Wolf Trapp a lot - and there is something magical about watching a performance while the fireflies flit about...

True, but I love the old, smaller, quainter Wolf Trap (pre-fire).
It's so big now!
Mrs. Shouse was a sweet lady. We would line up and she would give us Wolf Trap key chains every year.

Posted: 6/26/05 at 9:08pmAh, the good old days :) The new Wolf Trapp is large - and it fills up with people - DC has grown so much! Just call the next time you're in DC, we can watch fireflies!!

Posted: 6/26/05 at 10:00pmByron, my first experience with them was on a country road in Ohio. I screamed STOP THE CAR...and ran out into the night to play amongst them.........it was all so VERY gay, lol
#23re: Fireflies!
Posted: 6/28/05 at 12:25amI was lying in bed one night - it was pitch black - and I opened my eyes to see this drifting, blinking light bobbing around. It's strange and cool seeing them inside like that. I always try to let them back out. Ever notice how bugs NEVER seem to understand what you're doing when you're trying to free them?

Posted: 6/28/05 at 12:58amJTF2, it's worst when they're inside the car. You're shooing frantically while driving, trying to get it out the window... meanwhile, other people in other cars are looking at you like you're losing your mind. All you want is for the little bugger to get out of your car.
