My roommate and I met at an orientation; we spent a few hours together and clicked, and decided to live together. It worked out splendidly, for the most part, and we lived together for two years. Honestly, after you hear so many horror stories, I'd rather take the safe bet and do the former, because at least you know this person, and you know you would get along. That takes a lot of stress off, in my opinion. re: Banal details of life! Part 3

I'd rather let fate take it.

I mean, if you are friends to begin with, rooming with hercould possibly ruin the friendship there is. At least you know that if you don't get along with your 'new' roomate, you have someone to go to.

I'd rather keep friends at a distance because I know too much time with them can sometimes be a pain.

This girl is a friend of a friend. She's Jewish, seems pretty quiet and very nice, and her screenname is Broadway related. Seems ideal, no?

Random room selection can work out amazingly well. It can also be hell. I, unfortunately, experienced the latter.

How well do you know this person? Looking back, the things that became most important were cleanliness, how loud she was, and sleep schedule.

I hate to say it- nothing is ideal in this world.

Especially roomates

Have you met her, Elphie, or you've just spoken online?

You might want to consider together each others' sleeping schedules and cleaning habits, etc, before you decide.

I've met her twice. I just found out yesterday that she's going to Chicago, through my friend. She was supposed to give me her email address, so we could talk about what we put for our housing preferences. I'm not positive that she even thought about being roommates, I've just been thinking about it. We definitely have to talk. It might even be too late to request, although I doubt it.

Have you received the housing forms yet? Does it look like an extensive questionnaire for roommate match-up, if you choose to not room with this girl?

What did you end up choosing in terms of where you live? I remember you were asking if you should pick single-sex or coed.

I filled out the housing form already. There were about 9/10 questions and a place to write additional information. The questions were things like "Do you smoke?" "Are you neat?" "Do you want a single/double/triple?" Not too in-depth.

Em, I chose single-sex. It just seemed to make more sense all around. Also, my parents were pretty adamant.

You can get a single your first year? Luckyyy.

I think you'll be happy with the choice. Are there guys in your building, then, and just not on your floor? Obviously I wouldn't have had the option anyway, but coed bathrooms make me uncomfortable.

My tutor's daughter ran a 20 mile marathon in 50 minutes.

Is that crazy or what?

I think singles are limited, and maybe only for people with good reasons. I don't want a single, anyway. At least, not in my first year. Yeah, there are guys in the building, but it's a single-sex floor. The coed bathrooms weren't horrible when I visited, and the showers aren't coed.

SweetQ, that's impossible. It has to be.

What's the greatest number of people that they can shove into a room?

Here, they started turning lounges into four-person dorm rooms this past year. Generally, it's three, in a traditional dorm.

I'm going to go through four years of my life with three roommates?

I think, at least with what happened here, it was a temporary solution, because they're opening up a new building next year. More likely, wherever you end up, you'll just have one roommate.

Elphie, I just don't think I'd like it much. I don't know why. But it's probably because I'm used to not having to deal with that.

Well, at Chicago, most of the dorms are doubles. There are suites which hold four people in two separate rooms with one bathroom, and there are some singles and some triples.

SweetQ, I believe you, but...that's 20 2.5 minute miles. I didn't know it was even possible to run one mile that fast.

You can usually request if you'd prefer "apartment-style housing" (i.e. four girls in one suite) or traditional style (two girls to a room).

At most colleges, singles usually aren't available for first-year students, unless you have a medical reason for needing them.

I know there are other options, but they cost more.

F*CK.

Sorry. I'm not handling life well at the moment.

It's typically just the luck of the draw; housing is usually a flat cost.

I think my laundry is done, but I don't quite feel like getting up yet.

Sorry. I'm not handling life well at the moment.

I'm not, either.

Em, at NYU, you can request low-cost triples. I'm not sure how much money you actually save or if low-cost housing options are available at many other schools.

It definitely depends on the school; I should've said that.

I hope both of you feel better.

There's a fee for singles and another for a multiple.

At least at Barnard as a freshmen, you can get a tradiitonal double, a traditional triple, a quad suite (two bedrooms with a room for desks in the middle), a double suite (two bedrooms connected with a door but essentially singles), or triple suites (a room for desks and a bedroom for three).
