I just sat transfixed in front of the TV for two hours, not even leaving to use the bathroom or get water. And with subtitles yet! And me who can't sit still.
If you get an opportunity to see this film, DO IT!
To be brief, it's about a student in Romania who helps her roommate get an illegal abortion. It won the Palm d'Or, and I think is nominated for a Golden Globe, should get an Oscar if you ask me.
Has anyone seen it?

Posted: 12/18/08 at 12:15amI saw it. 'Twas great. I loved it. It really polarized the audience I was with though. There were a lot of uncomfortable men crossing and uncrossing their legs in discomfort.

Oh yeah, the discomfort level was high during most of it, for me.
And it's definitely a polarizing film.
I haven't seen such good acting, directing, and camera work in a long time.

Posted: 12/18/08 at 10:09amNo, it was on IFC. I don't even know what made me watch it, as I usually avoid subtitles-only because I never look at the screen constantly. I do other things while I watch tv. HOWEVER-this film grabbed me immediately!

I had wanted to see it in the theater, but I'd already dragged my one friend who will go see these kinds of movies with me to ANOTHER movie about abortion not long before so I rented it.
I saw it right after it came out on dvd, so I'm a little fuzzy on some of the specifics, but I remember it being really tense and claustrophobic, and ultimately ALL of the characters were kind of unlikeable. At the same time, I really empathized with their desperation.

Posted: 12/18/08 at 10:31amI thought this film was just fabulous, and while I don't relish watching it again, I will when my daughter is a little older, so that we can see it together. I though it was riveting, gut-wrenching, thought provoking and quite compelling. I'd recommend it without question, and would be tempted to advise that the the viewer be emotionally prepared for a stressful and uncomfortable experience (but I think that that kind of caveat can't help but to color the viewer's perception).

Exactly, Phyllis. It's the tension that wouldn't let me look away for a moment. When I said transfixed, I meant it!
And I agree, it's a dark film, and the characters (except for the boyfriend's family) were all unlikeable to a degree.
