Fox calls it an astounding victory for Palin- surprise!

Posted: 10/2/08 at 11:34pmFlipping between CNN and Fox. On CNN, they polled people who watched the debate who said Biden won 50% to 36% Palin (or somewhere a long that line). Rudy is on Fox and said it was an overwhelming victory for Palin and that only the liberal media will not agree to this. It's so amazing how different the 2 networks were. Sarah did better due to the lower expectations. Biden, however, did better than most people ever thought. Like CNN said, this is not a game changer and Obama is getting ahead in the polls. On CNN Carl Bernstein said this debate did a lot to make Sarah Palin look better but she did not make McCain look better. They also said on CNN how the evangelicals must be in an uproar to the fact that it looked like Palin agreed with Biden on gay rights- which we know is not right.

Posted: 10/2/08 at 11:35pmThey call it for Palin a week ago regardless on how she did. I admit, she did not do as bad as I had thought she would have but still, I would not be bragging or gloating either.

Posted: 10/2/08 at 11:36pmShe was still using a lot of sound bites and she repeated herself so much. Also, this debate did not seem to get into specifics. I really hated how Palin kept trying to be cute with her folksy little you betcha phrases!

Biden scores big on Iraq, Palin loses big with 'white flag of surrender' comment.

I totally agree with you about those stupid little "you betcha" phrases, SM!!!!
Annoying as anything. And she came across SO smug. I dislike her even more.

Posted: 10/3/08 at 8:11amStockard- I was yelling at my tv. On CNN today, the polls said all the "cutesy" stuff did not resonate with women. It did more with men- really? I just thought it was great how Biden turned the tables on her whole I'm a mom so I understand and then he said to imply that just because he was a man he did not understand when he did know what it was like to be a single dad who didn't even know if his child would make it through. Right after that, she went back to her rehearsed soundbites- she didn't offer any compassion at that point. John Roberts asked Guilianni if he had more experience to be VP- of course, he never answered the question- probably because he KNEW he did! I don't want an average-Joe as my VP- I want a smarter than average Joe! As far as bringing in someone refreshing- HELLO- Obama is pretty much that. Especially if they say he doesn't have that much experience- well then he couldn't be called a cronie then could he? I hope Obama blows McCain away on the next debates! I think he will because to me, McCain seems a little rattled. A BBC female correspondent gave the debate to Biden. She said he was full of substance and that Palin had to many "cutesy" things going on. Also said Palin wasn't up on foreign policy. I think we should hear more from BBC people!

She contradicted herself with, (paraphrasing) "the country needs some new energy in Washington, DC. [referring to Biden] - I respect your years of experience....." OK, McCain has been around just as long as Biden. Obama represents that new energy as well. Funny thing is, she kept saying that over and over.

Palin's performance basically consisted of a string of dependent clause talking points in desperate search of a period. It was incredibly hard to follow the even the very thin substance of what she had to say. And she used to be a journalist? A broadcast one at that?
She did not lose any ground among her base, to be sure. But anyone -- like Melanie Morgan, Michelle Malkin and Sean Hannity -- who calls this a slam-dunk for her is a moron.

Great article, Dottie. She is getting some pretty scathing op eds this morning.
I do have to say though, the fact that ANY party would not just accept that performance last night as a redemption, but cheer it as a success, ranks among the saddest moments in American history, to date. How low we've sunk. And anyone who insists they are okay with the possibility of her having to step in as President is a dangerous, brainwashed, deluded moron.

On substance, Biden was the easy winner...although I will admit the whole thing put me to sleep once or twice.
Wonder how James Dobson and his ilk are going to respond to Palin agreeing about benefits for same-sex couples.

They both did well, and I was surprised that Palin did so well. However, she didn't win the debate. Some of her answers had nothing to do with the questions (again), particularly that Achilles Heel question toward the end. Totally clueless answer.
Biden looked like her grandfather standing on the stage with her. (Don' you just love HD television?)
But he clearly won this debate.
I felt bad about him having to do this the very day before his son deploys. And I'm not surprised his emotions caught him off guard at one point about it.
His points and opinions were very strong and he stayed focused throughout. I actually gained a lot of respect for him last night.

I was most fearful of Biden's performance, but ended even moved to brief tears by him at the end. By yesterday afternoon I was appalled at the sustained blather about what he "better not" do -- condescend, call her "dear" or compliment her t-ts. It was so patronizing, assuming a man of his stature just couldn't get past her pudenda, so to speak. He was actually at his all-time best, and Lawrence O'Donnell said that on MSNBC this morning. The CBS poll said Biden's "ready to be president" (or however it's worded) was 87% -- a record high in a poll -- vs. her 41%. But considering that all she had to do is not talk about the view from her window, she 'survived,' the word the print media is employing.
But she still scares me. Last night, I didn't see the hawkee maaahm, I saw the wolf killer.
There's a mean-spirited aftertaste that lingers after even her folksiest faux quips; it's all too gosh-darn charmin' when underneath we see a bald power grab, and not even a whiff of humility. This woman believes she deserves to be there, deserves to be in the VP chair -- and no doubt, leader of the free world. That alone is the single most frightening reality of 2008.

That and her frozen Jack-O-Lantern smile, no matter what was being discussed.
It was such a Stepford Wife disconnect. She didn't visibly react to anything specific being said.

And the most terrifying part of your post, Auggie, was reading that 41% of Americans think she's ready for the White House.

Illuminating to read about a group of diehards in a Utah pizza place... Republicans already determined to vote the ticket, but apparently felt massive relief simply because she didn't humiliate herself. The low bar we talk about in this culture is ever with us. Apparently, Peggy Noonan gushed similar sentiments, from her own pointy-headed lair on the East Side of Manhattan.
Peggy and David Brooks, who send their kids to private schools, can now hold their heads up at the strip mall again, buyin' their slim jims n'brewskies!
It was like rooting for the back-up PTA President giving the fundraising speech, 'cause gosh darnit, the Prez is home with the flu, poor dear. But this back-up gal did just fine, and even remembered the name of the principal! This new view of the leadership in the free world -- as two wars rage, the financial backbone of the nation breaks -- that all it takes is a keen eye and some darned common sense, and anybody normal American can do the job! Education? Maybe for, you know, doctors or somethin'. But President? No more liberals who THINK too much for us!
