re: Hurriacne Frances

Thanx bmeonbway2, I really appreciate your concern re: Hurriacne Frances
And Zola, you'd be suprised at the stupidity some people possess:
During Camille, a woman and her husband threw a hurricane party at their three story mansion and invited twenty three people. Their theory was that if the storm caused a flood, they'd moved the party up to the top floor. The mansion's bottom two floors collapsed, the woman and her husband swam outside through a broken window, but the man couldn't swim and thus drowned to death. The woman was the sole survivor and the guests' bodies were found over the weeks within a 50 mile radius.

re: Hurriacne Frances

Since when was it a five? And we're not in the eye path anymore...Not that it matters, seeing as how the storm is twice the size of the state.

re: Hurriacne Frances

Hi broadwaystar2b,
We made it to a hotel, which is safer than my parents' house and our apt (especially since we had to evacuate). I'm relieved that we are here b/c the hotel is a Red Cross site. This was all rather fortuitous since I somehow managed to book 2 rooms on Orbitz when the hotel said it was full.

Anyway, it looks like we all have a 20% chance of being hit. However, I think that Central and/or Northern Florida will get the "dirty" side of the storm. I hope they are wrong and it stays off shore....I can hope, right?

I can't think of what to compare this experience to, other than knowing your life could dramatically change in a matter of 36 hours and feeling completely helpless- there is nothing we can do, but prepare our homes (if possible- in our case, it was not) and hope for the best.

re: Hurriacne Frances

I just got off the phone with AlDente. Some of you may know that he had been in Miami on an important work-related assignment. re: Hurriacne Frances Anyway, he's back home....well, maybe not home, exactly...but he's safely out of Florida, at least. One less person about whom to worry.

Here's hoping that all who are riding it out "in place" stay safe.

re: Hurriacne Frances

That's great, Iflit. Glad to hear that Al is safely out of the way. For the sake of those living in Fl and other places in Frances' path, I hope this turns out to be a lot less severe than they are currently predicting

re: Hurriacne Frances

I just read that it has weakened to a category three but they aren't sure if it will strengthen again or not.
My avatar is a reminder to myself. I need lots of reminders...

re: Hurriacne Frances

Thanks Ifliti and Nina. I have a feeling it's going to be alot less severe than anticipated. Let's hope, at least.

re: Hurriacne Frances

It does look like it won't be as severe as anticipated, but it's nature and so difficult to predict. I think they are being incredibly cautious b/c of what happened with Charley.

Aside from some price gauging reports, we are pleasantly surprised how kind people are being. In the hotel where we evacuated to, they are running a shuttle to a grocery store every hour to help guests purchase supplies, etc. Everyone has been incredibly helpful. It's refreshing.....

re: Hurriacne Frances

Best wishes to anyone expecting to confront Frances. I grew up near the NC coast. Often it's the tornadoes that spin out inland and the huge volume of rain dumped that causes property damage & flash flooding. Stay safe and please don't take the storm lightly.
#FactsMatter...your feelings not so much.

re: Hurriacne Frances

Thanks javero- you are absolutely right. The news keeps showing many people out on the beach- surfing, playing, etc. in the area where we had to evacuate from! The adults are using extremely poor judgement (and the news has been saying that)... but seeing children out there... bad idea.

re: Hurriacne Frances

People are stupid...maybe it's just because I'm totally high on adrenaline, but the media is amusing me right now.

"Look at all these stupid people who aren't leaving this area! Stay with us, live from the middle of the hurricane all night long!"

And then the guys who like go into the eye just so they can report on it...

"I'm live in the middle of the deadliest hurricane ever! The wind is almost blowing me away! Oh look, a cow just went flying by!"

Ok so not exactly...but hey, I'll take my humor wherever I can get it.

Oh and we didn't evacuate after all...we're gonna stay here and try to fight flooding for what little it might be worth.

re: Hurriacne Frances

NotThatGirl- The media is amusing us as well- perhaps our nerves are just so fried from all of their frightening reports that all we can do is laugh. However, on NBC6, when the reporter asked the weatherman, "wow, it's really windy- the sand is burning my face. Is this the worse it will get?" The weatherman replied, "No. In about 4 minutes, winds will gust up to 40-50".... we were amused.

In case anyone in South Florida needs gasoline, Doral stations are empty and have gas (every other station seems to have run out- this is crazy!).

Stay safe and dry everyone!

re: Hurriacne Frances

Yeah, my mom's bagging everything in sight...it's kinda funny seeing as how half of it is junk. Kinda frightening too tho...I'm really worried about flooding. Still, I think she'd put bags over the furniture if she could...And yeah, nerves are definitely fried. I wish I had one of those hibernation pod thingies that they have in movies for deep space travel...then I'd put myself into hibernation and sleep through the hurricane and then just wake up and do whatever cleanup. Or maybe I'd sleep through the cleanup too...sleep until everything's normal. Yeah.

How's everyone doing with the hurricane?

re: Hurriacne Frances

my friends daughter (senior in college) had plans to go to myrtle beach w/ some friends for labor day weekend. everyone tried to tell them to cancle because of the hurricane, but their frame of mind was 'well, because people are being evacuated, the beaches wont be crowded!'

please Please PLEASE DONT BE SO IGNORANT! This storm is DANGEROUS! if someone is telling you to leave, LEAVE!

everyone in the paths of these hurricanes will be kept in my thoughts

re: Hurriacne Frances

What's making it so terrible is the speed (or lack of) that it is moving. I'm not sure what the latest speed is, but it crossed over us (actually, it's still crossing over us) at 5mph.

Damage in Miami (or at least near us) seems to be minimal- we have power.

I hope everyone else is safe.
