Posted: 3/26/08 at 9:21amI went to see "Miss Pettigrew" last night. While the movie is slight and rather predictable, Frances McDormand turns in a great character performance. After "The Country Girl" I hope she stays around Broadway for awhile.

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

Just saw the film.
Yes, it's predictable, but I adored it.
And Frances McDormand was absolutely perfect. Her charactization was flawless. What a great actress.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

It was so nice to see her play a character so far away from anything she has done before.
Watch Fargo then see Miss Pettigrew and you will see why she needs to be used more often. Or better yet, check out her first film, Blood Simple!
Brilliant actress.

Posted: 3/29/08 at 3:42pmI love her so much in Fargo. I haven't gotten to see Miss Pettigrew yet, but as a big fan of both Frances and Amy Adams, it's on my list.

On the subject, does anyone know where I can find a DVD (or VHS) of Blood Simple? Netflix doesn't have it, and I don't think they'll be getting it for a while. I'm going through a Coen phase and need my Frances fix!
On the subject of Miss Pettigrew, I'm planning on seeing it tonight or tomorrow. Not a huge fan of Amy Adams, but the movie looks good.

Edit: Argh! It appears that Blood Simple is out of stock on Amazon, unless I want to buy the Coen Brothers gift set, and I already own half of those movies. C'est la vie.

Frances, along with Judy Davis and Joan Allen are the three best working actresses (exception goes to Maggie, Vanessa, Angela and Stritchie)...
Check out Frances in WONDER BOYS, LONE STAR, RAISING ARIZONA...

I'll trade Joan Allen for Marcia Gay Harden on that list. Look at Harden in "Mystic River" and then in "Mona Lisa Smiles". What an actress!

The only reason to see Angels in America was to see the performances of Marcia Gay Harden, Ron Leibman, Kathleen Chalfant and Jeffrey Wright. The rest of the cast stunk up the stage.

Allen is superb in almost everything.
I love McDormand in general, but I wasn't crazy about Miss Pettigrew at all. I thought Shirley Henderson stole it.
That said, McDormand was superb in Fargo, Almost Famous (both Oscar-worthy), Mississippi Burning, The Man Who Wasn't There, Friends with Money, and Laurel Canyon. Very few actors today display as much unadulterated life force.
