Looks like fun, but I feel like I've seen all this before.

Ugh. The characters aren't likable or particularly interesting at all. They're mostly arrogant, smug, and one-dementional. I'm also tired of Disney's approach to character design. They've been doing the same buggy-eyed "Barbie and Ken on crack" looks for 20 years now. Why don't they vary it up at all?
I think it's time Disney cleaned house with their creative team(s) for animation and started over from scratch. They need a fresh approach.
It's really sad when I would rather watch The Black Cauldron than this.

"It's really sad when I would rather watch The Black Cauldron than this."
Oh that's a terrifying statement.
Believe it or not Tangled has some strong buzz. Last week Disney invited the press to an in-progress screening and the film was very well received. It's rare for a studio to do that so Disney (and John Lasseter) must be pretty pleased with the current state.
Now if only the marketing department would stop making this look like a lifeless, generic product of DreamWorks Animation...

Meh.
I noticed Rapunzel isn't mentioned by name once, while this Flynn is a couple times. Just as well they changed the title since it bears no resemblance to the fairy tale. But I still hate TANGLED. Makes me think of "tango," "Tang."

They're clearly appealing to boys now, which concerns me b/c up until the Princess/Frog underperformed it was conceived as being another entry in the "Princess" franchise. That's a big change to make so late in the development process.
My guess is that they're just showing a lot of Flynn in the trailers.
Either way, I'm still excited about Menken's score.

Posted: 9/16/10 at 2:17pmI get the feeling the movie is better than the trailers are letting on. (Not necessarily a masterpiece, but better than what we're seeing here.) Disney is too worried about avoiding the numbers of The Princess and the Frog, and the marketing seems stilted as a result.

Not for those of us who chose never to see any of them

Posted: 9/16/10 at 5:58pmYeah, I HATE the way they are marketing this. But I am still holding out a little hope that the actual film will remain (mostly) intact as was planned before The Princess and the Frog scare. The film does still have an Alan Menken/Glen Slater song score, including a number for the Witch, voiced by Donna Murphy called "Mother Knows Best" so there seems to be some promise, even if it doesn't look to live up to the films of the early 90's.

Posted: 9/18/10 at 2:21pmIs Menken just doing the score or are there any songs in it? The trailer does not look like a Musical but an action comedy. They need another Beauty and the Beast,Little Mermaid,or Aladdin.

Posted: 9/18/10 at 2:46pm^The marketing for this film is so terrible. Yes, the film is a Disney musical in the vein of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin etc. Menken and Slater have written (I think) 5 songs for the film. Early reports say this is Menken's best film work since Aladdin.

Posted: 9/18/10 at 4:42pmWOW! That's saying a lot. You'd never know it from the trailer. If he had songs that good, they should have thrown it in the trailer. I LOVED the songs and score from ENCHANTED.

Posted: 9/18/10 at 8:17pmYeah, I don't expect we will see anything in the advertisements that this is a musical. Even though this film is said to not be a cynical spoof on the fairy tale, they know that a Shrek film makes 3 times more than a film like Princess and the Frog, so they are masquerading it as such to get a decent opening weekend at least before word spreads that the film is not exactly what is being advertised.

I finally got around to watching The Princess and the Frog last night and actually, it...wasn't amazing. I mean, there's nothing I can point to and say, "That's awful", but it didn't have the spark of the really great Disney movies. And I say that as the kind of musical-loving girl that Disney is probably afraid its audience is limited to. I don't think The Princess and the Frog had a mediocre box office performance because it didn't appeal enough to boys; I think that happened because it just didn't live up to expectations quality-wise.
Which just makes Disney's panic movies in naming and marketing Tangled even more stupid. If they believe in the movie, they should sell it for what it is. It's really sad to see adults projecting their biases onto little boys.
And yes, Tangled is definitely a musical. I remember Zachary Levi (the guy voicing Flynn) getting all excited about it in an interview ages ago because he loved the Disney musicals so much as a kid.

I thought the Princess and the Frog was great EXCEPT for the music.
Seriously, somebody smack the guy over the head who keeps hiring Randy Newman! He's been writing the same "toe-tapping ditty" over and over again since 1978.

Not to mention his lyrics are quite literal...
We're gonna take ya down
We're gonna take ya down
We're gonna take ya all the way down:
We're gonna take ya down
We're gonna take ya down
We're gonna take ya all the way!
Goin' down the bayou!
Goin' down the bayou!
Goin' down the bayou!
Taking ya all the way!
... as the fireflies lead them down the bayou.
BTW: If The Princess Formerly Known as Rapunzel can get out of the tower with the aid of her hair (as is evident in that trailer) how can she be trapped?

Posted: 9/19/10 at 1:13pmDisney needs to figure out that their current mindset of "How are we going to get this to sell toys, damn it!" isn't working for them. When they weren't worrying if their movies were appealing to a certain demographic, it worked out better for everyone.

Clearly she needs a man to tell her that she can actually take action for herself.

The film's duet between Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and Flynn, (Zachary Levi) "I See the Light" has been leaked.

I definitely like it. Lyrics are a little banal, but that's to be expected from Slater. I'm hoping that people can see past the horrific marketing and give this film a chance, it's supposed to be great.
