If Perry gets the nom, I think the Dems should buy copies of the book he wrote, entitled Fed Up, and send it to every independent or undecided voter. In it, Perry advocates his extreme views on entitlement program, saying that Medicare and Social Security should be abolished as Federal programs, and replaced at the state level, if states were inclined to create such programs. He also calls for the end of direct election of Senators, advocating that state legislatures should choose senators, as had been done until the 17th Amendment around 100 years ago. Oh, and this is not some obscure college thesis from years ago, this is a book released just last year.

This guy should not be taken lightly, but there is tons of fodder for the Dems to use to scare the crap out of any moderate voter.

why is it that the republicans can't come up with ONE candidate who doesn't want to use american tax dollars to LIE to children?

when will they accept that obama is overwhelmingly CENTRIST, and really, if he gets re-elected in 2012, it's only because the republicans keep putting up candidates who are worse precisely because they will not divorce themselves from organized religion?

It's one of many crazy contradictions that the GOP claims to support the concept of 'American exceptionalism', but they want to teach faith based folklore that flies in the face of all scientific evidence to kids in public schools.

Now, I completely support freedom of religion, but it has no place in public schools. The GOP's willful ignorance should not be forced upon kids. They can say whatever they want in their churches, around their dinner tables, and at their political rallies, but it needs to be kept out of our public schools.

I wouldn't mind religion being taught in schools as a part of world history in an objective manner covering the basics of the main religions and their foundations. But this whole idea that USA=Christianity and Christianity MUST rule the nation is obscene. To me, it does more harm to the religion than good.

But in all honesty, I think these extreme conservatives garner more publicity than actual support that translates into votes during a Presidential campaign. The farther they get, the more wacky and unstable they will appear. The media will attack them like vultures. I mean, McCain might have had a shot if he hadn't hitched his wagon to Palin. And while Perry and Bachmann may not be as stupid, they're probably more crazy. And the farther they get, the more it'll surface.

but that's the whole point. see how badly it damages our national discourse. republicans could pick someone who is not a nutjob and the religious right will vote for them because they would never vote for obama. yet over and over again the republicans feel the need to court the "moral majority."

america needs to wake up, most especially the liberals, and see how damaging this nonsense is. consider how much energy we waste on the whole matter of homosexuality. which is really this simple: we are primates and sometimes you see homosexuality amongst primates. that's all there is to it, but these lies make it so much more complex than it needs to be.

Well, it hasn't taken Perry long to bring out the inflammatory rhetoric. Let's see, he's said Obama doesn't love America, the troops don't respect Obama, Ben Bernanke is guilty of treason, etc. At the same time, he's trying to run away from policy positions he put in writing just last year.

All the while, the media is completely dismissive of Ron Paul, who came in a very close 2nd in the straw poll, and is the only person in the GOP field who has any character at all. Note: I don't think I agree with Ron Paul on any significant issue, but I can at least respect the man for some integrity.

In Perry's defense, the corn dog pic looks like the State Fair Grounds in Dallas, and I'm reasonably sure every governor of Texas is required to eat one a year.

That said, having lived in Texas while Bush and Perry were governor and Arkansas when Huckabee was governor...I would take Bush ANY day of the week over either of those two.

I'm not an Obama fan, but it looks like I may be forced to vote for him again.
