"Also, boys won't misbehave as much because they will no longer be trying to impress the girls, and the girls will be more likely to speak up in class because they won't be afraid to look smart in front of the boys."

What about the gay boys and girls? No one ever thinks of us!

AFRAID to look smart in front of boys? That was my weapon (and erm..still is). Those boys don't know what they're talking about! So set them straight!

I mean, Denzel Washington? Gun to my head..of course.

I went to an all-male high school. I hated the idea of going there, mostly because "Beverly Hills, 90210" was the popular show at the time, and I wanted my high school experience to be just like that.

Freshman year was pure and simple hell. But by sophomore year I came out of my shell and it was great.

There was so much male bonding going on, and we were so comfortable to just be silly boys without having to worry about impressing girls and stuff like that.

I'm not saying single-sex schools are the answer and co-ed schoos are awful. I teach at a co-ed high school now, and its great.

It looks like the Board is single sex too.

Well, let me tell you: I worked at a camp all summer and those girls were almost uniformly out of control! I have never seen such sexually aggressive WOMEN, much less girls, outside of a coke-fueled club night.

There were many occasions in which the girls had to be shooed away while the boys were doing some activity, and it was also the girls trying to sneak into the boys' cabin after lights out.

I think it's a good idea--plus the boys are more likely to experiment without the girls around, which would have helped me ALOT when I was in high school.

I do believe there is something to be said about single-sex schools; boys and girls have different ways of learning.

i think that's the slogan they were really looking for, lil: single sex schools - providing a place for hot boy on boy action.

I think that's the most common misconception about all-male schools---that they're a haven for gay sex. Ok, I've only gone to one all-male school in my life, but it was for 4 years. And while male bonding and hugging and all that were everywhere, and yeah things could get homoerotic at times (why did the football players have to have their hands all over me when they asked to copy my homework?), if anybody acted in a stereotypically gay manner....forget it your life was over at that school. Touch-feely things were ok, as long as it didn't come off as gay. Just what I experienced.

Peeps, this is radical. i say make them single-sex nationwide or abolish public education at the primary and secondary level altogether.

Taxpayers are getting virtually no ROI from the current school board-teacher's union mafia.

I imagine that the single-sex approach dampens the effects of bullies and sexual predators in the class room.

Single-sex instruction calls for far more men in the classroom. No offense to anyone here, but too many boys and young men consider learning an effeminate pastime.

There could be Title IX issues at play if the students are placed into separate schools based on gender with disparate spending on sports programs. Many public primary and secondary schools receive some form of federal funding funneled through the states.

I could definitely see abolishing public education as it exists today. It was created to democratize American children to ensure that every child receives the exact same free education, whether your parents are billionaires or crackheads. But......haha its not quite that way is it. And yeah a lot of is the teachers unions, and alot of it is uncooperative parents. But most of it is the way taxes fund the schools, which ensure that a tax base that consists of millionaires and mansions will of course ensure a first-rate public district, whereas an inner city district will spend a ton of money per student (like the ones in North Jersey that spend almost $20,000 per child) but all that money has go to go to pay the teachers because they'll never find a public school teacher who will work in the inner city schools unless you pay them a ton.

as an inner-city high school teacher myself, I am quite critical of my public school colleagues.

Of course we need public education, and I believe the main way to improve it will be to change the way its funded. Right now, public schools in the burbs are actually just private schools for the rich funded by their taxes (they never turn down a school tax) and the poor areas which have no tax base get nothing. And then the teachers are expected to make something out of nothing and..........yeah its just a mess.

Well this surfaces at an interesting time. I just took a break from writing a research paper about single-sex education and this is the first thing I see on BWW.

Anyone who attended sexually segregated schools can attest that it does not solve problems of violence or sexual activity. Has any Catholic school for girls had a reputation for kindness and chastity? Ever?

Resurrection High School for girls in Chicago won an award for having the most volunteer service learning hours of any high school in the country. There's kindness.

And unless you've done or read any research on Catholic schools........you dont know what youre talkin about! : )

Ok i'm sorry lepetit.

Yeah I do place some of the blame on public school teachers. Its really tough because I know there are some teachers who are there because they want to make a difference and blah blah blah, but there are a lot more who have unfortunately chosen the field of education because they think they can make good money. I would love for teachers to make more money, (duh I am one) but, I dont like how teachers rush to apply for the richest, whitest, most suburban district they could find.

Why can't these muthafriggin' presidential aspirants delve into the heart of this issue like we have???

I'm sick of campaign fodder from the main contenders.

george, may i add to your argument that inner city districts with an oft-disproportionate amount of federally-subsidized housing units really take a beating. a few years back there was a trend towards inner city businesses packing up and moving to edge cities (or overseas) being replaced by churches all over the place or boarded up storefronts.

don't even mention that the inner cities have become magnets for illegal aliens and their school-aged kids which is a subject beyond the scope of this thread. most urban areas were not designed to support 10 people living in a house which places a huge strain on infrastructure like sewage treatment facilities.

this is not the sexiest topic but as an exercise i'd like each of you to investigate how your sewage is disposed of today. then think about the impact if the population in your vicinity should double in 10 yrs with no upgrade to the sewage system. i did the research into my county's waste water treatment practice once and authored a paper as part of a grad school research project some years back.
