Looks good.
I'll take a closer look when I get home later.
I sure hope they're careful with the GALAXY GLUE.

Many, many moons ago (approximately 30 years, to be more precise) I began five years of intense comic book reading and collecting. It is from those days that my enduring love of Wolverine sprang.
Somewhere in 1980 I picked up the first issue of The New Teen Titans and my comic-reading "cool" fanboy friends mocked me endlessly, saying what a dumb series it was. But I really loved the notion of a group of powerful teen friends.
I eventually fell out of the habit of buying and reading comics. Imagine my surprise to learn several years later that The New Teen Titans had really taken off as a title and people were paying big bucks for the issues people mocked me for buying in the first place.
It was really fun to look at the character breakdowns on that page you linked, Sueleen. It reminds me in all the right ways of the Teen Titans. I haven't purchased a comic book in eons, but I'll get that one. I bectchya it'll have major appeal to the high school gay/straight alliances from coast to coast.

Man, I love that new gay comic book characters keep coming out right after my friend did her research paper in our writing course on comic books about homosexuality in the medium. When she wrote it, there was...Northstar. Then, soon after, they come out with the whole new lesbian Batwoman, and now this. She gets so mad everytime something new comes out that would have made her paper so much easier.
Then again, a new book about mythology in Neil Gaiman's Sandman series came out literally DAYS after my paper was due that would have been a great source.

I think it's cute.
For the record, Taryn, there's a huge (and not necessarily explicit) gay comics world out there. My BF is one of them. There are other "superheroes" as well in those universes.

It looks so corny. Like super gay.
OK...explain the correlation between "so corny" and "super gay". Of course it's "super gay". It's about a group of teens who are PROUD to be gay. Yet you seem to be attaching a negative connotation to "gay".

Isn't pride a sin? I mean even if I don't believe in sin, we just want to fit in, not to be looked at differently. I am a total HOMO - and I am far from self-hating. The last thing I have is Gay Pride. I will never understand it, I am not proud to be gay, nor am I ashamed. I was born this way, it's me, I don't need to prove anything.
Look at the designs. The eyebrows of the men could not be more feminine. The women look like drag queens. It looks like they are just going through every stereotype and making that a character arc. Right down to that color scheme and what's up with that ridiculous purple triangle logo? To me it looks like a really lame parody of what someone thinks a gay comic would be like. I think if anything, this would do a disservice to our community.
I am very happy that kids are able to come out more and more. I'm glad there is content available for them. I haven't read this or seen the comic, but from the cover I think it already looks cheap and just corny.
I used to work in animation, and I know a ton of comic book artists. Many are gay and you know what? This is the last thing they would want to produce.

Never judge a (comic)book by it's cover!
I don't know how someone who has only looked at the cover can say this is a terrible thing.

Oh. Brother. The three sentences you wrote that give me the impulse to just completely dismiss you are:
"[W]e just want to fit in, not to be looked at differently," "Isn't pride a sin?" and "I think if anything, this would do a disservice to our community."
The "sin" line is just stupid. "Even if" you don't believe in sin, why the hell bring it up? If you do, the fact that you're a sodomite would probably be more of a problem for those who use theology to oppress others anyway.
I do not want to, nor have I ever, "fit in." My slightly bent perspective is exactly what makes me me. The fact that I am a guy who has sex with other guys does make me different, at least, from the normative majority. I wouldn't trade that for anything. So, when you say "we," think again.
As for "doing a disservice to our community," well, I personally don't want anything to do with a community of homosexual individuals who "just want to fit in" and who think that a comic book is simultaneously "corny" and damaging. You go have your own community, thanks.
Clearly, if the book rubs you the wrong way, it's not meant for you. If the best you can do is criticize a comic book for using the vernacular of comic books and then for some reason complaining that it's not "good for the gays," you should just move on and enjoy what you enjoy.
When the link for this book first appeared on BWW I passed it around to gay and straight friends who work with youth, including one who has published a book on gay/straight student alliances to terrific notices. They were all very psyched to hear about it.

Right. Because comics have never, oh, say, glorified and made sex objects of women?
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#24
Posted: 10/3/06 at 1:50pmMy only complaint is, couldn't they get better artists? I mean, the cover illustration looks quite amateurish.
