Gay Superheros to the Rescue!

Well, that's a subjective complaint, SM. It's quite possible the cover artist is one of the creators. You're going to tell him he can't draw the cover to his comic book?
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#27
Posted: 10/3/06 at 2:24pmAnd sinful.
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#30
Posted: 10/3/06 at 2:31pmDon't you have a screamingly stereotypical gay reading list-approved book to get back to reading, youjusthavingfun? What's next, Jackie Susann?

HAHA!
Is this your comic book? You are taking it very personally. You should be ready for criticism if it is. Comic book fans like myself are pretty merciless.
As far as my stereotypical gay reading, at least it's at much higher standard (and that doesn’t say much) than this drivel. Though I'm basing my opinion purely on this hack cover art. Thankfully this is not the first nor the only gay comic book out there. There are great characters and story lines that aren’t some pride preach fest.
This reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Millhouse buys all those "Biclops" comics LOL.
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#32
Posted: 10/3/06 at 2:50pmI think Biclops is a totally different character in this comic.

Nope, it ain't my comic book at all. I was just repeating the enthusiasm g/s alliance types had for the project when I forwarded them the link. And you have to realize that the critical standards you claim in that first sentence are undermined by the second. Totally.

Posted: 10/3/06 at 4:11pmI wish you didn't announce that you were "a homo" and crowing about reading Peyton Place. I think it does a disservice to your community.

I post of an Off-Topic Broadway message board. That is pathetic enough isn't it? I will say and do whatever I want no matter how hypocritical my rants are. These lame arguments and bitter b!tchfests get me through the day. I'm secure in myself and my masculinity, why should I be ashamed if I read smut novels or play football? I don't represent anyone but myself. I also don't put out lame comics. Am I the only on this board that thinks that comic book is a joke?

Not that it means anything, but I did read the first few pages. It's fun and colorful, and I probably would've liked it more if I had been 15.
But I'm not.

"I don't represent anyone but myself."
Then don't refer to "we" and "our" community, k?
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#39
Posted: 10/3/06 at 6:27pmlike i said i will be a hypocrite if i wanna be.
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#40
Posted: 10/3/06 at 6:35pmEven though it's a sin, you seem pretty proud of that.
re: Gay Superheros to the Rescue!#41
Posted: 10/3/06 at 6:39pmI guess if you believe in sin. Hmmm is that a sin?

Never, ever judge a comic by its cover. The cover artist is often different than the main artist and the content of the cover might have nothing to do with the actual story (to the point where the character on the cover doesn't even appear inside).
That said, it is a pretty "meh" cover. Not everything can be James Jean's Fables work, though.

Posted: 10/4/06 at 10:22amhmmmm, i was never a big comic book fan so i can't say much more than that it looks like a comic book. what more do ya want? i don't think that every new venture has to re-invent the medium or provide the greatest, newest, hottest art to still be relevant. i think it's great that there's a comic book out there with gay superheros.

Plum, don't disparage cover artists! My BF does a lot of cover art, especially for books for which he provides no inside content.

Posted: 10/4/06 at 10:31amdown, boy. she didn't disparage. she just said that the cover art is often not indicative of the content, not that cover artists are the chickenhead hoes of the comic world.

Neat! I just found out about this thread! Thanks for posting about Pride High :).
On some other boards, people have taken a look at the cover and assumed that the kids were all stereotypes. In case people here also had the same assumptions, let me introduce the kids of Pride High.
Mindsweeper: Black gay teen who listens to KMFDM and Front 242, rather than the latest hip hop sensation. He guides his blind teammate Suravi in combat by "mindcasting" images directly to her brain. The leader of the team and Kid Mischief's boyfriend.
Kid Mischief: Latino empath who can wreak havoc on an opponent's emotions. A staunch vegetarian ever since he made an empathic link with an animal bound for the slaughterhouse.
Suravi: No... that is not weave. Suravi (Sanskrit for "Sun") is Indian, specifically Tamil. Born in Chennai, she was raised in Arcata, CA by her adoptive Quaker parents. Blinded by her own powers at the age of four, she can project searing beams of light from her hands and has the strongest attack of the entire team. She knew she was a lesbian even before her first telepathic glimpse of other girls, courtesy of her bestfriend, Mindsweeper.
Scotch Bonnet: Scottish lass with the power to create semi-sentient creatures of flame. Unlike other heroes of her ilk, she lacks any derivation of the words fire, flame, heat, pyre, char, scorch, or singe in her name. Her namesake is the second hottest pepper in the world. Kid Mischief's bestfriend and Suravi's roommate. Straight, mostly :).
Chip Cheetah: Brit blessed by Bast, the Goddess of Cats. The straight boy of the team, though he's assumed to be gay because of his accent and circle of friends. Has immaculate teeth!
Some people have questioned the quality of art. Pride High is an independent project. Everyone involved has a full-time job in addition to this. Actually, the artist has *two* jobs and still manages to work on Pride High. I'm unable to pay him much, and for all of us, this is a labor of love. With that in mind, I'm quite proud of the quality of Pride High, especially given the fact that we're a 36-page, full-color comic book in a world of small indy titles that have far less pages and are black & white.
Pride High is now available for mail delivery across the United States and Canada through Comixpress.com and IndyPlanet.com.
There are previews of the comic book in English, Dutch, French, and Japanese. The non-English versions are being finalized, and should be available in the next few weeks.
All of this can be found over at http://pridecomics.com
Back on October 1st, there was a signing event for the local San Francisco release. Here are the pics:
