Gay couple featured in Tide (Canadian) TV commercial

I must admit I’ve been seeing this commercial on TV lately and I thought they were just roommates. It went right over my head!

As it's invariably the man who's wrong when a couple bickers on a tv commercial, how can a bickersons scenario possibly work with a same sex couple?

I guess I was confused because the guy on the right looks “TV gay.” But the guy on the left looks like Motel Kamzoil. I was confused by the non-traditional casting.
