I don't know why it always makes me sad to hear people reacting to violence with violence...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?! I just do not understand prejudice or violence. I really do not. I guess I am just ignorant or naive but I will never understand people such as these three guys.

As for reacting to violence with violence, I couldn't agree with you more. But I must ask, what would you do? This just keeps happening and I guarantee you before the end of summer there will be atleast several incidents like this to occur. Let me put it to you this way.

There are people out there who don't know me who want me dead because they are uncomfortable with who I love. I go to the mall or the movies on a Saturday night and I se teenage boys feeling up their girlfriends in the lobby or in the food court and people will just walk on by without turning or flinching. However, if I walk down the aisle at Target or Best Buy holding another guys hands they give us glares and shake their head. These people have something to say something to get off their chests! We are the ones committing some gruesome act.

People have no problem going to see a movie like HOSTEL II, which I am sure will be the #1 movie in America next week. Torture porn is okay but two guys kissing in public, well, thats just disgusting! In this country violence is tolerated.

Yeah, it makes me sad when people react to violence with violence, but other than holding our chins held high (this is before we are knocked unconscience and our chin is shattered)we just play the victim card and take it. In my opinion, if a gay man killed an attacker in self defense I would be overpowered with joy. Yeah, I'd be sad that a death occured and someone felt the need to attack someone over the fact that they are gay, but I would feel damn good knowing SOMETHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT! There would be some sort of poetic justice.

I am way too young to have encountered the hate I have encountered. I was at the movies once and just put my head on my dates shoulder and had my seat kicked, people move, and laughed out loud throughout the entire movie. My friend and I did laundry about a month ago and people at the laundromat obviously thought we were a couple because we were laughing and doing laundry together. You could feel the hate fill the room.

Stories like this guy being beaten disgust me. First of all, its not even a fair fight. Three against one? How f*%&ed is that? No, I encourage gays to react by using violence. We've been to nice about this for far too long. Sooner or later it will happen to you or someone close to you and I don't want that.I carry a bat in my car and a can of mace. I also know how to fight and am not afraid to do so. In my opinion, more gays need to toughen up like this and fight back because these stories aren't going away!

Before I go, I want to repeat one more time. "There are people out there who I don't know who want me dead because of who I sleep with." Think about that.

very well put romantico. I have to agree. and the problem is that most of America see no problem with this. They somehow feel that gays are "asking for it" just like they feel women are asking to get raped. Yeah, you're right the fact that we love someone that you don't think we should or we wear a skirt or we wear spandex when we go jogging really gives you the right to cause us harm. This is just as bad as a racially motivated hate crime yet most people don't seem to feel it should be a crime.

Sorry, but I just don't think living a life of fear is the answer. Carrying guns around just in case you get bashed is living a life of fear.

and not protecting yourself is naive. would you go into the worst area of town, park your car & leave it unlocked & fall asleep on the hood? Chances are you wouldn't. You're smart enough to know that you shouldn't do that. That you should protect yourself from that ever happening. That is all that carrying a gun is doing, protecting yourself.

I'm not saying carrying a gun around. I posted the pink pistols site but am not advocating that.I posted that more or less to show the extremes some gay men are willing to take. If my post seemed like I was I appologize for the blunder. I am however encouraging gays to carry something like mace and learn some sort of self defense. Living a life in fear is no way to live, I agree with you 100% Borstalboy. Again, I do not advocate guns at all.

Well, at the very least, let's hope these guys dont get the same judge who, back in the early 90s, allowed three other gay bashers to go free because they said they felt "threatened" by someone who, as it turns out, wasnt even gay.

Update:

"Three 19-year-old men in Lowell, Massachusetts were released without bail but given a nightly curfew after pleading innocent to attacking a gay man early Saturday morning.

According to the Boston Globe, "The alleged assailants saw the man in a residential neighborhood at about 3 a.m. on Friday, and used anti gay slurs before beating him, authorities said. 'We don't want you in our neighborhood,' one of the accused allegedly called out to the man. The three men, Jonathan Artis , Jeffrey Buchanan, and Jules Rugges , all age 19, face three charges: violation of constitutional rights with bodily injury, assault and battery, and mayhem. The victim, whose identity was withheld by authorities, went to police after the beating to describe his assailants. A short time later, police arrested three men fitting the description."

The Lowell Sun offers another report, from the court hearing: "Police allege that at 3 a.m. on Saturday, James Nickola, 22, walked into the Lowell police station with his face covered in blood. He told officers that three men had begun to taunt him as he walked along Bridge Street in Lowell. They caught up with him on West Fourth Street where he was jumped and beaten while being called a 'faggot.' Two of the alleged attackers beat Nickola, while prosecutors say the third man urged them on."

The attackers are apparently free on their own recognizance until a probable cause hearing on July 27."

Things like this make me sick. I don't understand what makes someone think they have to right to put their hands on someone else simply because they have a difference in sexuality, gender, race, or religion.

Sweetie - I certainly can't understand what makes a person think along those lines individually, But I DO know that it doesn't help for them to feel empowered by current power structures - which right now include our own government and certain major religions.
