I got to thinking today that there are really no gay-themed action movies. I guess BOUND could count (Though I haven't seen it), but that sounds more like a noir thriller than like something on the lines of DIE HARD. I know this will probably start a bunch of snarky comments like "300 was pretty gay!" but I don't want this to turn into a discussion about action movies with buried-but-obvious homoerotic subtexts. I'm talking about full-on out-and-proud movies that aren't afraid to kick some ass and take names.
If John McClane were trying to save his boyfriend in DIE HARD, do you think that would have changed the movie at all?

There's an action-comedy called Friends and Family which is pretty decent and the low budget gay themed action movie, Raising Heroes. There is also the movie D.E.B.S. which has a lesbian sub-plot.
There's also the Donald Strachey movies (Third Man Out, Shock to the System and the upcoming On the Other Hand, Death) starring out actor Chad Allen. These are based on the books by Richard Stevenson although I haven't read them or seen the movies.
I'd love to see a big budget action movie with a queer hero but I don't expect that to happen this decade, that is, unless Angelina Jolie stars in it.

I mean BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN did well and that was a SERIOUS DRAMA!
If Heath Ledger were still alive, imagine how cool it would be had he and Jake Gyllenhaal suited up and played the world's first openly-queer action buddy cop team!

True, Brokeback Mountain did break a lot of stereotypes but I think unless a movie were to have some big names behind it, it will never get made. Also mainstream America doesn't have a problem with straight actors in dramatic and comedic gay roles because of the dichotomy of the genres, action movies are different.
Big Hollywood movies with queer characters either are primarily dramas where the queer protagonist gets AIDS or is killed, or comedies where the queer characters are comic relief and play to stereotypes.
Think how long it took Hollywood for there to be a film with black actors playing non-stereotypical roles.

Posted: 7/7/08 at 12:37amNot exactly action but Chad Allen is great in the suspense mystery films of Donald Strachey. I think there are 2 on dvd and one on the way. THIRD MAN OUT was the first and SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM was the second. The new one coming out later this year is ICE BLUES. Fun movies with a gay detective!

i don't kinow if you could say kiss kiss, bang bang was "gay-themed" juts because one of the main characters was gay.
that's like saying silence of the lambs was transexually themed because one of the characters thought he was a transexual. makes about as much sense as most of the allegations and pronouncements around here, though.

Posted: 7/7/08 at 4:05pmI'm not sure about gay themed action movies, but I do know that there is a gay themed comic book. I forget what the name of it is but it's this crime fighting duo who are also married lesbians. I wish I knew the name of it, it was mentioned in this documentary on comic books that was on History.

There are actually quite a few gay comic book superheroes and villains. Here is a list of a lot of them below. Some of the more high profile characters include DC's Batwoman, and Marvel's X-Men characters Colossus and Northstar.

pap - We are gay, so if we say something is gay, then it is gay! Why do you think Tom Cruise had to drug and kidnap his child bride? Because we said he was gay!
That being said, I would just like any gay-themed movie that wasn't a cheap indie mess. There are very few out there that are even watchable.
