Girl with a Pearl Earring

What a lovely movie! Having suffered through both the Civil War and the crucifixion within the past eight days, Pearl Earring offered a welcome, nothing particularly horrific, visual feast. I'm one of those people who tends to like the book of something better than the movie, but this is an exception. It was filmed and acted in an understated way that actually added to the impression of watching a two hour long, three-dimensional Vermeer painting. The use of light and color was beautifully done. This isn't the film for someone seeking high intensity, quick paced action. It is a glimpse into a life behind a painting as it may have been in a different time and place. Homage is paid to the specialness of a true artiste, while still acknowledging the underlying fraility of the human possessing the gift.

Incidentally, Essie Davis, who is in Girl With a Pearl Earring, will be making her Broadway debut in Jumpers this spring, IFlit.

I do want to see this movie, I enjoyed the Vermeer exhibit at the Met so very much. I have to check out where it's playing, thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

If you're in the NYC area you should NOT MISS the "Love Letters" exhibition at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut, which features paintings by Vermeer and his contemporaries depicting people writing or reading letters. Though most of our correspondence is through Email these days, the seventeenth century Dutch took great pride in the art of letter writing. I went last week and in addition to the great Vermeer from Dublin, there are masterpieces by his lesser known contemporaries Gabriel Metsu and Gerard TerBorch. And don't miss the Jan Steen picture of a prostitute entertaining a client!

MasterCZ thanks for the link to Love Letters. It will be in Greenwich until May, so I might trek from Brooklyn to Connecticut once the weather is nicer.
