I saw Gloria at the Angelika last night and thought Paulina Garcia gave one of the better female performances of the year. I know we had a thread about foreign actors who have been snubbed for Oscar nominations before and Garcia needs to be added to the list.
The film is a beautiful character study about a divorced woman in her late 50s who will not succumb to loneliness. Garcia is SO lovable and imbues Gloria with so much happiness and laughter that I found it impossible not to root for her.
Although the film is short on plot I still wouldn't watch the trailer because it gives away some major sight gags/a final plot point.
I was such a fan of Frances Ha, and in a way this is a similar story, but with actors from an older generation. There's also lots of great music in the film. Garcia is not to be missed!
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
