Godspeed, Harry Reems

Sad to learn of the death of Harry Reems, the legendary porn star who ended up being a first amendment activist when he became the first actor to be prosecuted by the US government for a performance in a film.

People make fun of the porn cliches of the '70s, but Harry was the prototype. He had to invent them before they could become cliches. I always really respected him, because after his life descended into a nightmare of drugs and booze, he got cleaned up, became a Christian, and NEVER denounced his past work. In the documentary Inside Deep Throat he spoke of his pride at having played a part in the liberation movements and having survived the harassment by the government. I really respected that. In the documentary, he still had the mischievous spark in his eyes.

Both he and Robyn Byrd came out of that film and became free speech activists! Ha! It was filmed at my Alma Mater while I was there! In a couple Dean's offices. The fallout afterward was hilarious, the Main Gallery was not allowed to show and full frontal nudity in painting, photography or sculpture! Yeah, just what an Art School should condemn!

RIP Harry Reems and thank-you!

We had just started working on a play about his life called 'Porno Chic'
