Yeah, the Globes make some horrendously horrible decisions some years. I always think of Pierce Brosnan being nominated for THE MATADOR. Horrible.
They have been known to nominate some pretty awful performances as well as some awful films.
I forgot about Marissa Tomei for BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD. Another overlooked wonderful performance. Though I would have preferred Jennifer Garner for her turn in JUNO.
Oh, and I just noticed, no Elizabeth Perkins for Supporting Actress in TV? But Heigl got a nod? Weird.
At least we didn't get a dozen Desperate Housewives in the Best Actress in a Comedy category this year.

Not that it matters, but it would have been cool to see I'M NOT THERE nominated in Best Comedy/Musical. Probably my second favorite movie this year.
My initial thoughts:
-CALIFORNIACATION over UGLY BETTY
-ACROSS THE UNIVERSE over ENCHANTED
-CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR being a comedy/musical
-JOHN TRAVOLTA getting nominated. I thought he was rubber diarrhea.
-No nod for MICHELLE PFEIFFER in HAIRSPRAY or BECKI NEWTON/VANESSA WILLIAMS on UGLY BETTY

I guess Charlie Wilson's War has more comedy than everyone initially thought. Weird.

Was HOT FUZZ ineligible for Best Comedy/Musical because it's not an American film?
CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR is a comedy. Where's the problem?
Marion Cotillard should have been nominated for Best Actress in a Drama, not Musical/Comedy. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association seems to think that any movie made ABOUT a musician qualifies it as a musical (i.e., Ray). Had she been nominated where she belongs, Linney probably would've scored a much-deserved nomination for The Savages.
I saw Juno last night and finally understand the hype. The film is near-perfect, and I hope that it wins Best Musical/Comedy Picture. Jennifer Garner should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Some of her facial expressions were more considered and nuanced than some entire performances I've seen.
I saw JUNO about a month ago, and agree that it lives up to all of the hype.
Ellen Page delivers a star making performance in the title role, and Jennifer Garner turns in the best work of her career.
Oh, woops. Nevermind. SUPPORTING? What?
UNIVERSE over ENCHANTED? HA! That's comical.
Quick note: I hate when a dramatic musical is thrown in with the comedies only because it's a musical. I don't like SWEENEY in with HAIRSPRAY & JUNO.
I agree, it makes absolutely no sense that musicals are all thrown in together with comedies, even if a musical IS NOT a comedy. Absurd. Same with musician biopics being considered musicals. Makes no sense to me. RAY, WALK THE LINE, and LA VIE EN ROSE are NOT musicals.
I'm still tickled Jennifer Garner didn't earn a nod for her fascinating job in JUNO. I'm pulling for Ellen Page to win.
Munk, I thought WILSONS WAR was a drama. My bad. :^(
I still can't get over ACROSS THE UNIVERSE gettting a nod over ENCHANTED. ACROSS was a piece of arty ****, if you ask me. There is about 20 minutes that don't have to do with the poor and confusing plotline that was only there just to have more Beatles music.I mean really: 20 nurses that look like Salma Hayek and hospital beds start spinning like the Disneyland teacups? Or even better, buissness people "dancing"?

I'd rather see something like Across the Universe get a nod instead of a formula film like Enchanted. The Globes usually do a good job of recognizing the slightly moer experimental instead of the blockbusters -- which don't need a push from the HFPA.
The category isn't BEST MUSICAL AND COMEDY, it's BEST MUSICAL AND/OR COMEDY. What about the "Best Musical" category makes SWEENEY TODD not belong there?
But ENCHANTED was a ten times better film than ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. I guess they didn't want to nominate to bubby musicals, so they chose HAIRSPRAY over ENCHANTED.
I am rooting for Amy Adams to win. Yes, I loved Ellen Page, but she'll get Oscar recognition, as will Marion Cotillard. But Adams was a revelation in ENCHANTED, a brilliant performance from the best comedienne of this decade.
I wouldn't be so quick to say that ENCHANTED is a better film than ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. I do agree that ENCHANTED might be a more successful attempt (and I loved, loved, loved the film) but I will take UNIVERSE over ENCHANTED any day.
But if we're talking in terms of films nominated in that category, I would have nominated KNOCKED UP or THE SAVAGES before either ENCHANTED or ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.
Now Katherine Heigl is being blamed for KNOCKED UP's lack of love from the HFPA which is pretty absurd. I do think her GREY'S ANATOMY nod was more of a KNOCKED UP nod though.
SWEENEY belongs in the Drama category. There is no reason why Carter should be competing with Amy Adams. What makes a musical performance any different than a dramatic performance and so similar to a comedic performance that they should be separated like this?
I loved KNOCKED UP. I liked ACROSS THE UNIVERSE. But ENCHANTED was brilliant.
But SWEENEY is a musical...
Munk,
I think they get what the category is right now, that is Best Comedy and/or Musical.
But I think what people are saying is the categories should be made Best Drama and Best Comedy. Then, if a musical happens to be a comedy, put it in with comedy; if it is a drama, put it in with drama. As the rules stand right now, yes, all musicals are lumped in with the comedies so everyone was put in the correct categories according to the rules (except maybe Marion Cotillard), but people are saying there shouldn't be that rule where even a musical drama competes with comedies.
I agree with the notion that Walk the Line, Ray, Sweeney Todd, Moulin Rouge, Evita etc. should have been in the Drama categories.
However, the way it stands gives musicals a much better chance of winning.
Especially WALK THE LINE and RAY, because they are not musicals. They are dramatic biopics with music.
I do agree that they should do away with the Comedy/Musical thing. It should either be Drama or Comedy, with the musicals that year being put into whichever category it best fits. I wasn't disagreeing with that, I'm just saying that people seemed confused by the way the rules are now. Perhaps I misunderstood.
