Good Classic Movies

Ok, I am always yelling at my boyfriend for not knowing classic movies and not being cultured and all that good stuff. So, I was thinking for Valentine's Day I should get him some and then we can watch them together, yadda yadda. Which old movies do you think would be most suited for a teenage boy... however mature... who mostly likes sports... and yeah, that's about all? lol

re: Good Classic Movies

Well, in my opinion the best classic movies wouldn't seem to appeal to a typical teenage boy who likes nothing but sports, and who might be kind of closed minded - like most of the pricks I went to high school with. But, my favorite classic movies are:

Singin' in the Rain
All About Eve
Sunset Boulevard
The Godfather
Casablanca
The Deer Hunter
Chinatown
Taxi Driver

and my all time FAVORITE: Breakfast at Tiffany's

re: Good Classic Movies

lol Thanks... I'll look at those... He's not so bad... one night, he made me sit down and tell him all about Broadway; the shows, the people... he even remembered some of it!

Oh, so then he's definitely not typical!

re: Good Classic Movies

If you'd like a great, fun, classic movie to watch for Valentine's Day (or any time): "His Girl Friday." Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell bicker and banter a-mile-a-minute in a screwball romantic twist on "The Front Page." Great cast and still laugh-out-loud funny.

Breakfast at Tiffany's is a must!

Yay for this thread! Classic movies are about the only ones I have ever enjoyed watching (aside from sappy romances). I have quite a few to recommend, so you will have a big variety to choose from.

My favorites:

Thrillers:
Rear Window
Dial M for Murder

Marilyn Monroe:
How to Marry a Millionare
Seven Year Itch
Some Like it Hot

Musicals/Judy Garland:
Easter Parade
Singin' in the Rain
The Harvey Girls
Meet Me in St. Louis
The Pirate

Esther Williams:
Easy to Love
Duchess of Idaho
Dangerous When Wet
Million Dollar Mermaid

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Arsenic and Old Lace. It is suspenceful, plus Cary Grant's expressions are priceless.
"What a mystery this world. One day you love them and the next day you want to kill them a thousand times over." The Masked Bandit in THE FALL

re: Good Classic Movies

My personal favorite is "It Happened One Night". Clark Gable is just gorgeous and the movie is nicely witty as it came out before sensors became so stringent.
Though it may not be anyone's birthday, And though it's far from the first of the year, I know that this very minute has history in it, we're here!

re: Good Classic Movies

Not sure of the definition of 'classic', but, in addition to the above, I'd recommend to anybody:

THE SNAKE PIT
WAIT UNTIL DARK
THE UNINVITED
THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY
SPELLBOUND
THE PETRIFIED FOREST
TORA TORA TORA
THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED
THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL
ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW
THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS
I WANT TO LIVE

I think "Victor, Victoria" is so well done that it will acquire the status of 'classic'- if it hasn't already done so. It's hysterically funny, has some terrific music, and is romantic for Valentine's day too. And I've never met a guy who didn't think it was wonderful. (Watching Leslie Ann Warren get her mouth washed out with soap makes it worth watching if nothing else!)

If he's a sports fan, you might want to try Knute Rockne All American.

Even though I couldn't call a movie this recent a 'classic', I don't think you could find a better combination of romance and sports than Bull Durham.

BEAVERHAUSEN recommended the following

The Letter
The Women
Valley of the Dolls (camp classic)
The Goodbye Girl
Mildred Pierce
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte

Although I love some of these movies myself, I say you should only show him these movies is you suspect he might be gay.

However, if you are trying to see where you stand then show them and if he loves them, break up with him immediately. You've got no future.
