Gossip Queen Claudia Cohen dead at 56

of ovarian cancer (or stomach cancer, reports the Daily News).

Cohen, formerly married to Ron Perelman, was a gossip reporter for the Post and Daily News. Currently, she was a big contributor to Live with Regis and Kelly, which will air a tribute to her tomorrow.

Survived by her family, including a 16 year old daughter.

How sad.

She was a great New York character, to be married to and divorced from Ron Perelman and receive a gazillion dollars in alimony, then to have Senator Al D'Amato actually call a press conference to announce he was in love with her. THAT's New York!

She had an infectious sense of fun about gossip with none of the self-consciousness of a Cindy Adams or a Musto.

Ovarian cancer is insidious. It progresses undetected until it's too late to treat it. My mom died of it, at age 63, which was too young, let alone Claudia's 56.

But they're getting a lot of good gossip in heaven today.
