Wasn't there receintly an oprea version of 1984? I'm pretty sure that I saw that somewhere.

You know what'd be a very interesting musical and/or opera? Ayn Rand's Anthem. Anyone? It'd be really far out, but quite profound.

Because I've actually been thinking about this for a while... my picks for a Dunces musical cast:

Ignatius Reilly: Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Irene Reilly: Becky Ann Baker
Patrolman Manusco: Norbert Leo Butz
Lana Lee: Melissa Errico
Jones: Ben Vereen
Darlene: Laura Bell Bundy
George: Mitchel David Federan
Dorian: Gavin Creel
Mr. Levy: Denis O'Hare? Maybe George Hearn if they wanted to go for someone older?

Eh. I have too much time on my hands.

Has Atlas Shrugged ever been made into a musical or play?

The Fountainhead is basically a soap opera to begin with . . .

I cannot find ANY evidence that Atlas Shrugged has ever been dramatized, as a straight play or musical...

I wonder if she wouldn't give out the rights? I think I recall that Fountainhead was a movie. Perhaps her experience with that affected possible other projects.

http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0041386/

Atlas Shrugged seems still seems pretty topical. It kind of surprises me. It appears that it may be the subject of an upcoming film: From IMBD:

Howard Baldwin (Producer of "Ray") is spearheading the project for the "Atlas Shrugged" movie. Today I submitted an approval for the "Atlas Shrugged" on IMDB.com. It said it would take on average 7-10 days to be posted. It also stated that if it wasn't submitted in 28 days that the request would not be accepted. I said that the film would be shown in 2008 but I don't have any clue what will happen.

A musical version of Anna Karenia has been recorded and is available on Compact Disc:

Also, there was a brief ballet based on Tolstoy's Novel in the film THE TURNING POINT (with Anne Bancroft as 'Anna').

how about Great Novels that should never be made into musicals?

Catch-22, War of the Worlds, A HItchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I do have to agree with The Grapes of Wrath though. Even though i hated, hated, hated the book, I think it would make a great stage epic (a la Ragtime).

when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.

I'd stop with the use of "famous" texts and go with an old-school Oprah book.

She's Come Undone (how many amazing-voiced big girls are there who could have star turns as the lead in this)

Why no one has done Elephant Man I'll never know.

I'd also say seeing something like "House of Sand and Fog" made into a nice show...a show that introduces us to a new culture we didn't already know...not too many shows are doing that.

Ooh, I love the idea of She's Come Undone as a musical.

And YES, Mary_Ethal, I AM a mind reader! Isn't that nifty?

Actually, seeing the article, I think I did read about it when it came out. Too bad I'm not in New York to see it.
