Who do you think was or is the greatest entertainer to have been?
Please make your choice!
Personnaly i think it is Elvis Presley, opened the doorway for everyone after him and like John Lennon said
'Before Elvis there was nothing'.

After reading your last few posts, I'm guessing you're an Elvis fan.
Am I right?

In 1999, Time Magazine chose the "Greatest Entertainer of the Century". The finalists were Charlie Chaplin, Louis Armstrong, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis - all performers who excelled in more than one medium (music AND movies, for example).
They chose Sinatra as the winner.

Posted: 7/1/04 at 9:07amI love Sinatra too, but I don't feel like he should have been voted entertainer of the century. He is not terribly musically talented, and he wasn't an amazing actor in my opinion. I have only seen two or three of his movies so I could be wrong.

Posted: 7/1/04 at 9:39amI'd have to vote for Judy Garland from the options given here so far. She was a consumate performer on all levels, a triple threat, and had the best acting chops of anyone of her generation. Watch A Star is Born if you doubt me. There are scenes in that film wherein she will feel her heart-wrenching grief so clearly, you will be amazed.

In 2004, I would have to go with Bette Midler.

Posted: 7/1/04 at 10:26amOH - I thought this thread was talking about "all around best" entertainers - which to me meant triple threats - maybe I misunderstood. But I still wouln't rank Bette up there - she's amazing but not the best (in my opinion)

It's also best ENTERTAINER, not best singer or best actor or best dancer.
There's this thing called charisma ...

She may not have charisma, but she's got a bigger d*ck than all of us put together.
Uh-oh. That one's gonna get me banned.

Of all the folks in that list, yeah, it would have to be Garland. Career spanning decades: MGM icon, major concert performer, TV shows, radio shows. Worked with everyone in the business from Fanny Brice to Sophie Tucker to Jimmy Stewart to Gene Kelly to Fred Astaire to George Cukor to Barbra Streisand to Tony Bennett to ... well, the list goes on and on. Film Classics? Puhleez -- OZ, ST. LOUIS, STAR/BORN, NUREMBERG. Carnegie Hall. Even at the end of her life, when she had no money, going down for the count, she was still one of the biggest stars in the world. And now, more than 30 years after her death, she's still being discussed, written about, "documentaried", etc.
Yeah, have to be Garland.

I would have to go with that woman who dresses up like Marilyn Monroe and stands in front of Planet Hollywood.
Either her or the Naked Cowboy.
