Hello, I am looking for some advice on what to do with a snake living near me and my family's house. I live in AZ and on a military base, and have lived here for a very long time. Today while my dad was in the backyard, he heard a rattling/hissing noise. He first thought it was a water sprinkler from our neighbors yard, but then saw that it was a tannish white snake with it's head up hissing at him. The snake was kind of long and medium sized. He took my dog from the backyard and went inside the house to call housing(it's a place where you can go if you have any problems with the house or animal problems.) While we were waiting, my dad went back outside to find that the snake had went from our backyard to right near the side of our house for shade. My dad went back inside and me and my mom waited for the person to come help us inside the house. When the man came, I showed him where the snake was, but it was gone. The guy told us that it probably was a Bull Snake (I think that's what he called it.) and that it was probably looking for shade or to get something to eat(we have alot of prairi dogs in our backyard.) The guy then said that he wouldv'e just "shooed" the thing away. So now it's night and we can't find the snake anywhere. I have a couple of questions now:
1)Should we still be worrried about the snake being near our house? We have lived here forever and this is our first encounter with the snake.
2)Should the guy still have looked anyways to make sure the snake wasn't still around?
3)What are the chances that it will come back again?
4)What exactly is a bull snake and does it live in the ground? If so, what should we do?
If you have any other advice that you could give to me, it would be very helpful to me and my family. I thank God that nobody go hurt today. So please, if you have any advice for me, please lend some. Thank you.
Oh and I would also like to know if I shuould report the guy who said he wouldn't do anything about the snake.

Have you thought of making Google your friend?
This is an odd question to be posing on a theater board (even the off topic one).
I imagine Google could do a lot more for you than anyone here (most of whom, I'd venture a guess, don't have this problem).
Now, if you were having trouble with deer, black bears, or Canadian geese, I could help you, since in my part of New Jersey, we have lots of trouble with them.
Bull snakes aren't poisonous, and dangerous only to small animals and birds. It won't hurt you or your dog, unless it's a chihuahua.

Make sure the snake doesn't get on the mutha****in' plane!
While bull snakes aren't poisonous, I'd be concerned about the rattling sound you said your father heard.

Oh, I can't wait. Probably the best worst movie ever. I wish I was in the "pitch meeting" where the writer was like, "I have this movie. It's about snakes that are on a plane. And it's called 'Snakes on a Plane.'" I'm sure the movie producers was like, "Brillant. Here's a couple million."
Yeah, if a rattling noise is what made your father aware of the snake, it ain't no bull snake. Only Rattlesnakes rattle and they are all poisonous, I think.
if it is indeed a bull snake and you heard a rattle, then chances are it's eaten a baby recently and was playing with the baby's rattle under your house. having just fed the snake will probnably go somewhere to digest its meal. do you have any babies in the house? now that it has a taste for baby flesh, you'll probably need to get rid of the snake. have you considered a getting a mongoose?

I read a story that said the pitch meeting for "Snakes on a Plane" went like this:
"Are you ready? Three words: Snakes. On. A. Plane."
Back on topis: Bulls snakes are harmless but don't rattle. I wouldn't worry about it. If you've lived there for "a very long time" you have no doubt been near hundreds of snakes without knowing. dont' bother them, they won't bother you. I'd keep the dog on a leash as dogs don't leave snakes alone, however.
