Hurricane Charley is heading toward Florida
I live there for the summer
I am there now
This sucks
What part of FL are you in?
These names keep making me laugh when I hear them on the radio. They were tropical storms when I first heard them mentioned - Charley and Bonnie. My aunt's next door neighbors are Bonnie and Charlie and there have been plenty of storms at that house. Don't mean to be insensitive to your worries. Hope you and your family are o.k.

No, not yeah...scary! SCARY! I'd *rather* be in school than here under the big dead tree...
I almost started a thread about this last night...
Everyone send the hurricane fall apart vibes!

We got so lucky in South Florida- the news just reported that the worst is probably over. Our thoughts are with you in Central and Northern Florida...especially on the West Coast. Be safe!
Thanks...I'm about 15 minutes away from Disney. We're supposed to get it really bad after dark tonight.

Charley's hitting MASS on Sunday (where I am til school starts). I'll be at the beach. Great.

Yes- they just said on the news that Disney, Universal and Busch Gardens are closing early. I really hope that although it is supposed to strengthen to a cat 3, it will not be a direct hit on FL... Re: Mass, hopefully it will dissipate by the time it reaches you.

hey, what is the update on the hurricane? It should be close to noon Floridas time, I have relatives there..thanks!
It's gonna hit land further south than they thought it was going to--they're saying around Sarasota now. It's over the keys as I write this; it's supposed to hit the coast around 3 or 4, the Orlando area after dark. It's a category 3 storm with winds at 115 mph right now and Florida has a huge risk of tornados since we're getting the right front quadrant of the storm...off to board up windows...joy.

bax- South Florida (well Miami, where I am at least) is completely dry- it's even sunny out. We are still under a tornado watch until 5pm, but so far, it is fortuitously uneventful. www.nbc6.net is South Florida's NBC affiliate and www.wesh.com is Central Florida's NBC affiliate.
As of the latest advisory (it's 12pm here) Charley is predicted to hit the West Coast of Florida. The lowest rain bands are still imapacting the Keys and the eye looks as if it is moving east. This means that there is a better chance of us in South Florida to get feeder bands today into tomorrow. They also fear that it is still strengthening (it's on the verge of becoming a cat 3). The outer rain bands are beginning to reach the West Coast and there is concern it will make landfall from Tampa to Fort Myers.
Sorry if this is choppy, but I basically transcribed the weather update. I hope this helps!
I hope, for the sake of anyone in it's path, that it looses steam and turns out to be a lot less severe than predicted.

I wonder if our own DofB is being affected by the storms?
Well, this school year has been starting off swimmingly
I get a blank period
Required semester exams
and now a big fat hurricane on Friday the 13th
please let this be another Floyd
A blank period? Does that mean you're pregnant?!?
I don't think I'd wish it to be another Floyd. Alot of people here in NJ didn't fare too well with that one.

Just wanted to pop in with a few links for those with Family/Friends in the path of the hurricane.
They say it is now a Cat 3 going to be a Cat 4 by the time it hits where ever it's going. I've heard it's coming right up Tampa Bay and then I hear it's coming in south of us but we will still get the bad winds/rain from it. Just not the storm surge we thought.
If you can not get a hold of your family/friends by phone, even a cell phone, do NOT panic. A storm of this strength will knock down many power poles/cell phone towers. Service will be restored as quickly as possible after the storm has passed.
Make sure you know where your family/friends plan on riding out the storm. If you want to get in touch with them to know where they are, now is the time before the storm hits.
So far it is only light rains here in my area near Tampa but there are bad storms to the East of here. Tornado warnings are up and some have already been spotted.
Take care, stay safe and be well.

Stay safe! In the 1pm advisory, the Hurricane Center projected that it will hit south of Tampa around Port Charlotte. Although they have been pretty accurate with this storm, after the Irene diaster (it hit Miami dead on... everyone was going about his/her day and it was chaos, but fortunately, not as bad as it could have been), I am still worried about the Central Florida area. Our thoughts are with all of you.
Thanks DofB5!
