HURRICANE CHARLEY

Posted: 8/13/04 at 3:58pmHmm...that would be now...they were saying an hour a couple minutes ago...they keep changing out hurricane warning time. It was 2, then it was 10, now it's 6...it's sunny out right now. weird. They just lifted our tornado warning though so that's good.

Posted: 8/13/04 at 4:19pmA reporter near St. Pete/Tampa (he did a live stand up from North Redington Beach, which is in the Tampa vicinity) said they think Tampa is in better shape. He said the power was out and the bridges remain closed. Further notice will be given when they are "in the clear." I'll post again when they break in with additional news about the area.

Posted: 8/13/04 at 4:33pmThey just showed a projection of the storm and they said it will probably go over Orlando, at which time South Florida will experience feeder bands. From the projection, it looks like Tampa will not be directly impacted (I'm sure weather will be horrible, but it doesn't look like the "dirty" part of the storm will impact the area).

Thanks for the update.
Is Fox13 still reporting? Patrick Wilson's dad,John, is one of the anchors and my friend in the Tampa area says John's been on lots throughout the daytime giving updates.
Bet he wishes they were in L.A. with Patrick about now...

It looks like Tampa and St. Pete have dodged the bullet regarding this storm.
The only bad part about this is that the people who did not evacuate this time will think it will be ok to stay the next time (and there will be a next time) as will some of the people who did evacuate. Wrong choice. You have to get yourself out each and every time.
I’m not sorry for anything I did (taped the windows, mowed the grass, put all the patio chairs away, filled the bathtub with water, etc.) or bought (extra bottled water, dog/people canned food, batteries, Sterno) and would/will do so again the next time.
We just lucked out this time.
My thoughts and prayers are with the people to the South of us. They are having a pretty rough time of it right now. Charley was up to a Cat 5 just before it hit land.

You are so right, DoB5.
I live in Buffalo and whenever the snowstorms are heading our way we have learned to be sure we are prepared. Each time is a unique event. The weather doesn't "remember" where its been before.

Posted: 8/13/04 at 5:05pmThey were just talking about the people who did and did not evacuate on the news here as well. Apparently those who evacuated may end up being hit by the worst part of the storm, depending on where they evacuated. However, like you, DoB5, I would do the same thing in the event of another storm. We are all so lucky right now. I keep having flashbacks of Andrew. We evacuated to Orlando, but so many of my friends stayed in Miami-Dade County since it was projected to hit Broward County. I can't even imagine what they had to endure, or what the people who are experiencing this now are going through. My thoughts and prayers are with them too.

Posted: 8/13/04 at 5:47pmi am so sick of these hurricane warnings and storm warnings. bonnie and charlie and yolanda and zoe...please, stop already. all they do is scare people for no good reason. they always seem to come when a poll shows bush's approval ratings rising too. it's just too much of a coincidence if you ask me.

Posted: 8/14/04 at 8:21amHow are our Orlando/Central FL friends faring today? I hope everyone is OK and the damage to your homes is as minimal as possible. Punta Gorda looks pretty bad- they are reporting it is just one notch below Hurricane Andrew.

I had to get up early to see what happened overnight. We had no problems at all. Never even lost power.
If it was only so for the folks South of us. They say there are many missing and dead. Even the people in shelters were hit as the roof blasted off of some of them.
The saddest story I've seen/heard so far is the group who stayed with their mobile homes and as the news reporter said, "Paid for that decision with their lives. They can't even get the ambulance in to take the bodies away."
I don't think there is anything that can be said or added to that.

Posted: 8/14/04 at 10:41amWe're fine except that we lost power around 10 and that lasted until about 5:30am. I was supposed to go into work today at 8 but I called in. With all the trees and lights down and everything, there's no way I was gonna deal with it. I'm surprised anyone got to work.

You definitely did the right thing. They showed people walking and driving through water with downed power lines... not a good idea.
Hang in there!

Hey everyone!
The storm hit my home pretty hard around 10 Fri night and we lost our power for the night and the next morning but it came back at about 9 am. We have a leaky roof in our family room. Yesterday I raked and bagged 7 bags of fallen branches and twigs. There's plenty more to go.
Unfortunately, we still don't have cable and it's been gone since the Parade of Nations for the Olympics aired. Today my dad brought home his verizon wireless connect from his office so now I can tell you all that I'm doing fine. They cancelled school for Mon & Tues too but we already know they're making up for one of our days by having school on the day before Thanksgiving. We've have rain-showers all day.
I'm also gonna report for my best buddy N0tThatGirl213. She had a 70 ft Oak tree fall on her house. It was removed today and now there's a hole in her ceiling. She still doesn't have power or cable.
But we're both alive and well.
Love you all

I'm glad you guys are ok! That is really scary about the tree.
People here in NC were spazzing out yesterday. One teacher suggested we reschedule the preschool open house. there was RAIN. Not even wind or heavy rain...just RAIN. You would think that this didnt happen 2-4 times every year!
