OK, so I am pissed about this 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' remake coming out.
Just heard yesterday they are planning on remaking my favorite film of all time, 'Captain Blood'. Argh!
It gets worse.
THEN, I hear MTV is doing a remake of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show'. WTF?
NOW, today I hear a "Hairspray" sequel is in the works.
Remakes and sequels, its all Hollywood has left.If a film is successful a sequel is a MUST in Hollywood!
Variety says they have not decided if this will be a musical or not. (Good God!)
"New Line Cinema has made a deal with "Hairspray" creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to summer 2007's hit musical feature, reports Variety.
Planning to return are director/choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film.
No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of Hairspray had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010.
The first film starred John Travolta, Christopher Walken and Nikki Blonsky as well as Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.
Aim is to pick up the Baltimore saga of the Turnblad family after the resolution of the first film, which was set in 1962."

Do we care what happens to the Turnblad family?
And if they have signed on the choreographer and songwriter, I would assume this would also be a musical?

Posted: 7/24/08 at 9:15amI don't understand why they are making this either. The original dealt with a pretty heavy subject matter, although I know it was comedy. There is honestly nothing left that they can do that will top the original.

Folks may want to check the thread on this on the main baord for Marc Shaiman's comments.
Stockard - the presence of a songwriter and choreographer does not necessarily make it a musical. That just means there will be songs (like most movies) and dancing (like many movies).

It's just a treatment, nothing more. It feels like a hundred movie musicals get "announced" by the big studios that lead to nothing.
That said, its still a bad idea. Had Waters been inspired to write a sequel (like he did for the unproduced PINK FLAMINGOS follow-up) that would be one thing. But this is a suggestion from the suits who just have $$$ in their eyes. Its anti-inspiration. Its wrong.

Its going to cost them a lot to bring the entire cast back. All will demand more money than they did for the first one. I would rather see John Waters do a new original movie than this. Guess he needs to pay the bills though.
This whole idea totally sucks! Are any of these remakes and sequels making any money? I'm waiting for the 'Capt'n Crunch: In search of Lucky Charm's Fruit Loops" movie to go into production. Breakfast cereal is the only thing they have not made into a film as of yet.

John waters will make more money for writing this script (which will NEVER get produced) than he's ever made for any movie he's been associated with.
I'm glad to know that he will be comfortable for all his remaining days.

Posted: 7/24/08 at 4:11pmI would be surprised if they get everyone back. My guess they would have to shoot by the fall of 2009 (Hairspray was shot in the fall of 2006) to make their mid July deadline. I LOVED Hairspray,don't get me wrong. But c'mon! A sequel?

Anyway, like I said I for one don't care about the plight of the Turnblad family enough to see a sequel. Heck I didn't even see the first one. (I saw the original with Rikki Lake and Divine though)
