Okay, I know that there are so many of these help threads, but I'm really stuck.
I am audition for hairspray in June and need a song (or part of a song). It has to be 16 bars of either a up tempo modern Broadway showtune or a 50's/60's pop song, and it is sung with out piano.
I'm a Tracy type and need something that would really show off my voice.
I was going to sing "Burning Love" but it didn't seem quite right.
PLEASE HELP! :)
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuPlease. I really need help.

how about "not for the life of me" or "gimmie gimmie" from throughly modern millie? or even "hopelessly devoted to you" from grease might work.
hope this helps!

Why can't you sing Burning Love? Don't imitate Elvis. Rather think of yourself on the verge of first love and build it with wonder to a nearly out-of-control "Hunka hunka burning love." Be a nice girl on the edge of going bad.
Learn the whole song so you can use it for other auditions.
Have fun.
Xx
Thanks guys.
I was considering doing the song Hairspray from the original movie, but I didn't know if that would be to cheesy. What do you guys think?

You'd have a lot more fun with Burnin' Love.
And you could use it for years.
let me take one guess...hairspray auditions in june in Lincoln, Nebraska...for the national cast...am i right? lol.
No actually. The EIE open call in NYC. I don't stand much of a chance, but I want to give it my all none the less.

hahah, okay, sorry, lol. I got called back for Link for a national cast and theres more auditions and callbacks in Nebraska in june so thats why i asked.
As far as audition material goes...just search everything thats out there that fits your criteria. Go to your local music store and look through their scores or ask your vocal teacher (if you have one) and find what best showcases your voice. Its hard for other people to give advice with out personally knowing you or your voice, because whats best for one girl auditioning for Tracy, may not be the best for the other girl auditioning for tracy? know what i mean? so just spend some time at a music store and you'll find something. im sure of it.
Is this a tour or a high school? Cauuse the rights are not available for high schools.
It's an open call held by the actual bway show in NYC. So, it's perfectly legal!
I'm really leaning towards "Hairspray" at the moment.

If it will help here's a clip of me singing. Any other suggestions? songs that might work?

"Where the Boys Are"
not sure what show but it is definitely 50s style. perfect for Tracy and shows off exactly her voice.

Where the Boys Are is the title song from a so-bad-its-beyond-fabulous movie with George Hamilton, Yvette Mimieux, Paula Prentiss, Jim Hutton, Connie Francis, and Frank Gorshin. This is a must-see trash epic about spring break in Lauderdale.
The lead actress is Dolores Hart who achieved a bit of fame for a decidedly non-show biz maneuver. She left a very promising career and became a nun. (I'm not making this up, you know.) She is currently Mother Dolores and her convent is up in Connecticut I think. She is around 65-70.
The hoot is that she is still a voting member of the Motion Picture Academy and gets the screeners at the convent.
So sing the song and don't be afraid to camp/vamp it a bit. But sing it very truthfully. Mean everything the song says. The music ought to be easy to find. It is a semi-demi-standard.

I read the audition notice for this show, and they ask that you sing "Good Morning Baltimore" from the show and if you can't sing that song sing an uptempo 1960s pop song. I think they prefer you sing "Good Morning Baltimore." I would sing that if I were you. That way you don't have to stress about what to sing too since they asked for a specific song. Break a leg and I hope you have a fantastic audition!
they expect the rights to be out next january!

I could be a killer Motormouth but I have no idea what I could use to showcase my voice.
