See I didn't really like the Shining. I know I'm totally in the minority though.
Hey Stagey, the Great Pumpkin is on tonight!

Kubrick either does long and boring films or brilliant and fascinating films. 'The Shining' is precariously close to the line. I no longer find it as scary as I used to, and I'm surprised that with that length they found it necessary to excise so much of the original novel. Do watch it, if only you can form your own opinion, and it is the better Stephen King-based haunted hotel movie ('1408' - so full of potential, so ultimately disappointing
), but I recommend 'The Orphanage' much more highly. :3

They didn't have The Shining at the video store when I went yesterday (what a surprise, 3 days before Halloween...), but I did rent and watch The Blair Witch Project with my bestie who had also never seen it. The verdict? I really, really liked it! It was genuinely creepy because of the realism that was threaded through out; I've KNOWN those pretentious film kids and all of their actions seemed perfectly natural. Not to mention the fact that I've ALWAYS hated being in the woods/country (a fact which has earned a lot of teasing for this Kansas gal), which made their terror feel so real to me. Just one question--what exactly was in the bundle of sticks they found outside the tent? I know it was a body part of some sort, but I couldn't tell which one.
Tonight I'm watching Freaks and either The Nightmare Before Christmas or The Faculty. The former is a classic that I've loved since I was a little girl and the latter is a cheese-ball camptastic spectacular of washed up actors from the late 90s. Is Jordana Brewster even around these days? Plus who can resist Jon Stewart getting stabbed in the eye with a ballpoint pen?

I've been watching "Halloween" movies lately from my DVD collection lately. For the past month, actually.
So far:
The Exorcist
Exorcist III
The Others
The Other
The Shining
Rosemary's Baby
The Haunting
The Omen
Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein
Bram Stoker's Dracula
...also just for fun...
Bewitched (TV series)
Munsters (TV series)
Still have to watch:
Mad Monster Party (I watch it every year!)
The Sixth Sense
The Great Pumpkin
Ichabod & Mr. Toad
Paul Lynde Halloween Special
The Bride of Frankenstein
So little time, so many movies!

Seriously...my tivo is about to explode! I dont have enough time with all of my reality tv watching!
Kubrick's The Shining is not perfect by any means, but I still recommend it, Halloween or not!

The Shining doesn't scare me like it did years ago, sure... but it still creeps me out.
It crawls under my skin like few movies ever do. There is something so disturbingly "off" about the whole thing.

The movies with demonic children scare the crap out of me
so..
* The Exorcist
* Children of the Corn
* The Bad Seed
* The Shining (when those twins say Play with me I get creeped out)
* Salem's Lot
I also love when you don't see the scary thing and it is left to your imagination
*The Blair Witch Project
*The Last Broadcast
*The Others
and for camp value
*The worst witch
* The Monster Squad
On Halloween night I always watch Bram Stroker's Dracula

*bump*
(and reposted now, since my first post disappeared because I used the SEARCH function, like we're supposed to. That'll teach me!)
So what are the choices this year?
I kicked things off earlier this week with THE PAUL LYNDE HALLOWEEN SPECIAL. Good God, is that scary! But not for the reasons they think. Still, it was great to see Maggie Hamilton all greenified in a non-copyright-infringement version of her wickedest witch. (No MGM makeup and costume. Just a green face and a black outfit.) But when they all "boogied down" at the Halloween disco, with KISS, Betty White, Flo Henderson, Pinky Toscedero, Tim Conway, Billy Barty, and my other favorite witch, Billie Hayes as Witchipoo, I new I'd reached my blood-curdling limit. (No, I didn't just pull these names randomly out of a hat! They're all in the same TV special together.)
Here's a peek ... IF YOU DARE ...

I also watched "Carnival of Souls" last night.
Omen II is tonight.
Also pulled off the shelves for consideration in the coming days:
Mad Monster Party
The Mummy (Boris Karloff)
Don't Look Now
Bram Stoker's Dracula
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!
The Exorcist - The version I've already seen, despite their ad campaign
Phantasm
The Haunting (the original)
... and of course ... Halloween!

I've been watching horror all month (well I watch all year actaully). Here's what I've seen:
Trick r Treat (liked it)
Thaw (I love movies like this)
Red Hills (cliche, but good gore)
The Children (some good stuff, but ultimately muddled and slow)
The Gate (fun 80s throwback)
The Pit (liked it)
Hellgate (blah! WTF)
Imprint (if you can take Miike, this is excellent)
It's Alive (remake - not bad for straight to dvd; pales in comparison to the original)
Dead And Buried (for the classic needle/hospital scene)
Dance Of The Dead (Tobe Hooper in top form - excellent)
Fear Itself - Season One (like MOH, but for network tv. Very good stuff though)
Midnight Movie (disappointing)

Posted: 10/24/09 at 2:23pmIf you are the type of person who doesn't really like scary, but can handle gore, I recommend "Black Sheep." It was one of the most hilarious films I have ever seen. It was ridiculous, but worth it. Yeah, it is bad, but funny bad.

Oh god Marianne! Black Sheep is one of my favorites!
It is just so damn bonkers! I seem to recall that it was fairly gory though.
I had the poster as my avatar for awhile when it first came out.

I take it that you guys aren't talking about this 'Black Sheep':

Posted: 10/24/09 at 5:51pmI actually watched that Farley/Spade movie in theaters, believe it or not.

Can you imagine Farley falling on you? That's pretty scary.
God rest soul, I miss him.

Posted: 10/24/09 at 5:55pmDidn't he actually fall on Spade in TOMMY BOY? I seem to recall their sharing a bunkbed in some cabin in the woods, and for whatever reason Farley was on top, and then the boards just gave and he landed with a crash on poor Spade.

Farley always made me laugh even though his movies were completely asinine.
Beverly Hills Ninja cracked me up.

I saw that one in theaters, too!
Hey, it was the '90s and Farley and Sandler were considered comic geniuses. At least by my friends and me.

Back on topic, I just watched Seventh Moon (one of the 4 new Ghosthouse titles this year) and it was so dark you literally couldn't see a thing. I can take handi-cam and dark lighting but this was just absurd. I was actually pissed off at it.
Avoid.
