Humbug-I believe you are correct. In my case, it definitely was the size of the grater. My pieces of potato were too large. A friend of mine suggested a cuisinart but I"m not about to buy one for just this recipe. I like them with at least half to a whole small onion grated in!

humbugfoto, I agree. I use the hand grater. It's a pain in the ass but it's worth it.
It also helps to put the potatoes (after they're chopped, grated, processed, whatever) into a colander to press out as much water as you can to help them stick better.
