Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

"There’s a number called LIGHT MY CANDLE – that at one level is about getting her candle lit, that she’ll use to prep her heroin… but even more, it’s about her flirtatiously trying to get into Roger’s pants. And what’s really great about this scene – is – imagine you had a life threatening sexually transmitted disease, that you were a recovering addict that’d been clean for a little over a year – and in walks ROSARIO DAWSON with a baggie and craving sex. “Pop quiz Hot Shot, what do you do?” Heh."

This is the same man who once compared Blade II to...well...you just have to read that one.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Harry Knowles should be wiped off the earth. He's an odious fool.
Nothing precious, plain to see, don't make a fuss over me. Not loud, not soft, but somewhere inbetween. Say sorry, just let it be the word you mean.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

His review of Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle makes a legitimate arguement for Nazi Germany-style censorship because of the last paragraph alone.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

He's a prize tool. I just went and skimmed through his Kumar review and the Rent review and it makes me really sad that someone who can barely string a sentence together has made it so far.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

But he loved RENT, and he gives heterosexual males a reason to go see it!

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Doesn't stop him being one of the most irritating people walking the planet though.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

I remember the first time I ever saw him. It was after Gene Siskel died and Roger Ebert had a rotating panel of guest reviewers before settling on Roeper. He was one of them.

I thought: What the hell is Bruce Vilanch doing reviewing movies with Roger Ebert?

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

At least Bruce Vilanch is witty and intelligent.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

"Family for many of us is defined by not just “Mom and Dad” or the “Wife & kids,” but that extended rag tag group of friends. The ones each year we reach out and help deal with the ravages of living through another year. It was that side of RENT that really really got me. "

I thought it was a well written review. The above line in particular stood out to me because that's one of the themes in Rent that really speaks to me.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

"You know how incredibly ****ing hot ROSARIO DAWSON was in ALEXANDER or SIN CITY? That’s nothing on how absolutely drop dead whip it out and whack hot she is in this. HOLY SH*T!"

Did a movie reviewer just use the phrase "whip it out and whack hot"? WTF??

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

No, a movie reviewer did not. An educationally subnormal ****tard did.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

He's not really a movie reviewer per se. He's more like the comic book guy from The Simpsons, only with worse hygiene.

Phew. Glad we got that all cleared up.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

I thought he made a very good review from a non RENThead standpoint.

Did anyone read the talkback, it is quite sickening.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Not to mention that just about every poster on AICN is a total bastard. I posted a review when I saw a preview screening on POTO and I got blasted for sounding intelligent and accused of being a plant.
Little f**kers.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Knowles isn't a professonial reviewer; he's a fanboy and sells himself that way. There's a reason AICN focuses on sci-fi, comics adaptations, and action movies. And why every thread about a movie involving a gay director or actor will inevitably involve a touch of wannabe macho homophobia. (I always find that hilarious coming from fans of the spandex brigade.)

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

And Rose, they're afraid that anyone who actually has an idea of how to write and doesn't mention...well, whipping their dick out is a studio flunky.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Good point. It works on the same principle as homophobia.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Dude, Jacob, why did you prompt me to read the comments? I feel like I need to vomit now.

It does make me feel better to think that most of these zit-faced, out-of-shape, dateless freaks who post on a site like that probably spread most of their seed on the computer keyboard to photos of Hillary Duff's head on some nude model's body rather than actually breeding.

Egads. I've posted twice on a Rent movie thread! re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Honestly, if his review is enough to get one person into the theater who wouldn't otherwise see it, why the hell are we complaining? He loved it - isn't that what matters?

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

DO NOT read the Ain't-It-Cool talkbacks. Ever. There's not an intelligent person among them.

Have you ever seen the movie "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back"? The movie involved an AICN-type site, and at the end, Jay & Silent Bob hunt down all the people who posted in their talkback section and beat the **** out of them. It was awesome.

AICN is a total studio tool. I am sci-fi/fantasy geek, and I can't stand that site.

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

I just can't read reviews. Did you all really read that whole thing? I just don't get it. Why would you want to read the opinion of somebody you don't know? What's the point? Anyway, I got two paragraphs in and I bailed. Just too boring.
And enjoy the beauty - all the joy and beauty - that a Merry Christmas can bring to you!

re: Harry Knowles Reviews RENT

Why would you want to read the opinion of somebody you don't know?

If it's an intelligent, informed and well written opinion, I have no problems with reading what someone I don't know thought of something. They may say things I agree or disagree with, offer an insight that I previously hadn't considered, something, anything. Harry Knowles brings NOTHING to the table.
