Harvey Levin of TMZ New Yorker Article

Did anyone read the article? It was well written and worth discussion on this board. Perhaps someone more able can post a link to an online version. It talks about the evolution of celebrity gossip, the changes that have occurred since the days of Doris Day and Rock Hudson, the lengths TMZ goes to to get a story and the many contacts at their immediate disposal. When Michael Jackson died they printed a story within 18 minutes. And when Whitney died they were able to get into the hotel room to photograph the tub with the water still in it.

"And when Whitney died they were able to get into the hotel room to photograph the tub with the water still in it."

Now that is something to be proud of!

I don't understand how this works. Evidently TMZ makes their money buy selling their info and clips in various media markets, yes? So why don't the sources with the info and clips sell directly to the media markets for a bigger payday? What exactly is the financial model? Of course it's all despicable and clearly profit driven but I can't wrap my head around how it works..

I have been curious if Harvey and crew ever found out some dirt on the People's Court Judge (who I love), if they would dish or cover it up.

The article also talks about the stories they did not report on. What is interesting about the article is how Levin's reputation has changed over the years partly because we no except that style of journalism and feed off of it. Now celebrities call him in hopes of getting some sort of press or photo opportunity and then when his crew shows up they "act" surprised.

You can compare it to Michael Riedel of the NY Post in a way. When he first starting writing his column people were appalled and spit on the dirt he walked on but over the years they realized that he actually was cultivating more interest in the theatre so many befriended him and learned that there is no such thing as bad press.
