Yes they do only live in deep waters, usually pacific waters... that is why Sperm Whales have adapted to dive so deeply, because they prey on the Giant Squid. There is evidence of this in that they have found sucker marks on the belly's of the whale, showing that the Giant Squid can put up a fight against a Sperm Whale!!!
Giant Squid are fascinating creatures! I think all Cepholopods (octopus, squid, nautilus, and cuttlefish) are among the most fascinating invertebrates on Earth!!
Fun Fact: The Giant Squid, Architeuthis Dux has the largest eye of any marine animal!

This is supposed to be a very young giant (or perhaps colossal?) squid. It's 17 feet long. Look at the size of that eye! Are they born with the eye full sized?

Posted: 1/16/08 at 11:09pmNo, most cepholopods, including squid begin life in a planktonic state, very very small and metamorph into what you see there... They have short lives, living only 5 maybe 6 years.

Mamie, are you sure those pictures are real? They look fake, especially compared to other pictures I've seen.
Did you know that giant squids can EMIT LIGHT??! That's so cool.
ETA: In answer to my question, I believe that that picture is a model of a colossal squid, not the actual thing.
