Mine was mixed, it is EXTREMELY hard work, but the result is very good assuming you are good. It is really hard though and completely nerve wracking. I only did a short 15 minute thing as an opener for my school

Mr Roxy is a stand up comic....what do you mean he isn't?.....Then why does everyone laugh each time he stands up?

I did stand-up for about a year six years ago. It started as a dare. I was, thankfully, very successful at it. I played a couple of the big comedy clubs in LA and NYC, and emceed a few gay prides. Then I got a show that I stayed with for over a year and never did it again. I have no desire to do it again - but, it was one of the best personal and professional growth experiences. I actually found it to be quite easy and stress-free. I got up and basically told true (but exaggerated) stories from my life. It was extremely liberating, even when they didn't laugh. I think everyone should try it once.

People keep trying to get me to do it, sort of to give my inane ramblings a venue. I don't know if I would do it. I'd be really really scared.
Maybe I'd try it out by doing it in a character or something. I realize each stand-up has to adopt a persona, but I'm talking about a purely fictional character doing stand-up.

I say DO IT! It really was a life changing experience for me. I found it easier to NOT take on a persona, but really just be myself. It taught me to "put myself out there" in more ways then one. DO IT! DO IT!

I had a friend who was trying to get into stand-up and would constantly write down things I say for future use in his act. The most memorable of these instances was when I randomly said "Do you think there are rapists that want to pillow-talk afterwards?" and he tried to do it at some sort of family function.

They say it never happens this way, but my first ever open mic night I KILLED.
I came offstage and somebody who had been performing for a long time said. "You're not going to try to tell me that was your first time?"
I just smiled, neither confirming nor denying. Cuz how it be considered your "first time" if you've done it in your head a million times like Rupert Pupkin.
Oh, C_S, you can't get away with rapist/pillow talk stuff.

I think my problem is that every idea I come up with for a stand-up act is pretty much something that Andy Kaufman did much better back in the '70s-'80s.

I did it once, at an open mic night at my place of employment (which, strangly enough, is a Coldstone Creamery). I was considering doing it for a couple weeks and had ideas for material, but I still wasn't sure if I was going to that night. But my friends convinced me, and while I hadn't ACTUALLY gone over my material, I went on. It wasn't the best, and I was pretty nervous, even if it was only for maybe ten people, most of who were my friends, but I got a few fair laughs. If I were to actually work on my stuff, I have a feeling I'd do pretty well, and I might in the future.

My first open mic for stand-up was last week and it was a great experience. I had been writing for 2 years before I had the balls to get on stage and actually perform it. Before going on I tried my jokes out on a random co-worker so I could get used to speaking to an audience of strangers. Then I just did it. That's all you have to do.
