Has anyone here gone to an Ivy League school?
#0Has anyone here gone to an Ivy League school?
Posted: 10/26/05 at 9:25pmI'm curious (and I'm posting it here because chances are, you don't post on the student board) because my top three choices for college are Yale, Harvard and Brown. Columbia also falls somewhere on my top 10.

Yale was my top choice too, and I almost went to Columbia. The school I ended up going to is not technically an Ivy, but we think it's better that way
Anyway if you want details you can PM me.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 9:38pmQuestion: Does Ivy League status really make a difference, especially if you're just studying the liberal arts? Will an employer really choose one person who majored in Philosophy over another, just because (s)he went to an Ivy League school?

Posted: 10/26/05 at 9:45pmThanks to the people who responded. I guess I was just curious. It's not the Ivy League status that really matters, it's just that my top 3 schools happen to be Ivy League, and I was sorta curious to see if anyone here went to an Ivy League school.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 9:58pmCornell grad here. Got a fabulous education and made a bunch of great friends. It also helped me land an incredible job right out of college. If you don't like snow though, this may not be the school for you. Good luck and have a wonderful 4 years!

I didn't go the Ivy League route, but I might as well have. My friends that went to Harvard loved their college experience while my friends that went to Columbia thought it was overrated. I guess it just depends on the person going.
Isn't it odd that the top eight most expensive schools in the US aren't Ivy League at all? Landmark and Sarah Lawrence are the top two. Landmark caters to students with learning disabilities.

Random fact: Did you know Cornell was the only Ivy League school that founded after the American Revolution?
I intentionally avoided Ivy League schools; the competition is too ridiculous. Not to deter you, obviously I know many people that got in them, but I just didn't want to bother with that.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 11:29pmNow, what exactly do people love about them? Is it the quality of education from the professors, the academic resources, the student services, rubbing shoulders with the rich, or the parties? We don't have Ivy Leagues in Canada, so I'm curious as to what the fuss is about. I mean, if George Bush can graduate from Yale, then it certainly doesn't look well on the school, does it?

Posted: 10/26/05 at 11:33pmI think a lot of the appeal is the history and the prestige of a big name. I mean, everyone in the western world knows what a big deal Harvard is. You can't really say the same about SUNY Oswego.

What counts is when an Ivy becomes a teacher to strangers!

Posted: 10/26/05 at 11:47pmI think the strangest thing about it all is that "Ivy League" is an athletic term.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 11:47pmI have a friend at Harvard now, and it totally weirds me out, because I figure Harvard is one of those places that doesn't ACTUALLY exist -But apparently she goes there and enjoys it very much.

Posted: 10/26/05 at 11:49pmHeh, my grandpa went to Harvard and he always said the Ivy League was established to give the schools a chance to win in sports. Because they were so academically prestigious, not enough people were interested in or good at athletics, so the teams always sucked.
