You don't listen to those genres yet you're auditioning for a show comprised entirely of that kind of music? Hmm...

Yes, it's very possible. She doesn't need to like folk/indie/rock to like Spring Awakening.
Try something by the Beatles.
No try "ONLY HOPE" the song Mandy Moore sings in "A Walk To Remember" or "Both Sides Now" i think it's Judy Collins? That is PLENTY folk.

Maybe Breath 2 A.M. by Anna Nalick? I'm also a soprano, and if I ever try out for SA that's what I plan on singing.

By the time auditions for this show are over the casting folks are going to be Beatle'd to death.
I'd say not only listen to suggestions on here, but actually start listening to folk/indie rock. If you're going to be auditioning for the show you're going to actually want to understand what's unique about the style of music used in the show, and if you'll noticed, a common thing among all of the show's young cast members is that they all actually like, listen to, and appreciate indie/folk rock music...
Thanks guys :)

DaneSaw, no matter how meaningful that all sounds they really are looking for talent, not interest in music...

I'm completely aware of that, but it's kind of necessary to have an appreciation for the music and know the nuts and bolts of it.

Why not try a gender neutral song by Duncan Sheik transposed into key that's good for you? He is the show's composer after all.
Ani DiFranco? Michelle Branch? The Cranberries? The Decemberists?
Not necessarily. Adam Pascal had never done theater in his life before Rent.
Michelle Branch is considered indie/rock/folk? Thats perfect, I actually know her music. I was slightly obsessed when I was like,...10.Would her music really be ok?

Well, right, I understand that. But if she appreciates the music in the show, then that is what matters most.

I got a really good one:
The version of "Blackbird" that was sung in the movie "Across the Universe". Nice plaintive indie-style arrangement with the mandolins and concertinas, and it should fit a soprano's range.

ooshizz146, while it's true that Adam had never done theater, Rent is not typical musical theater. Rent is a ROCK musical, and it's pretty likely that Adam Pascal had an appreciation/knowledge of rock music prior to the show.
Uh, don't sing something by Duncan Sheik. That's just tacky.

Spring Awakening is rock too.
And, "uh", I wasn't going to sing Duncan Sheik. I'm leaning towards Michelle Branch now.
blackbird is a good idea too actually...i'll def. look into that! thanks!!! :)

Break a Leg with your audition!! :)
Try Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac.

Maybe you can get the music transcribed. You can send the mp3 file over to a transcription service, and they'll write out a transcription of the music for you.
