re: Helpful suggestions, if you please

Oh jesus. 2 years isn't that long...

As mean as this would sound to her, I hope he meets someone else in England or she meets someone else...in the span of....2 years. It can happen. Probably not for her. But probably on his side. Believe it or not it's not the first time he's proposed to someone.

Do they need his parent's consent too? His parents don't like it but he'll be an adult in August.

Hmmm - I show that:

Connecticut: If under sixteen years of age, the written consent of the judge of probate for the district where the minor resides must be obtained. Written parental consent is needed if under 18 years of age.

Judge of probate for the district? I obviously need to read up on this.

So, with a judge's siggy they could marry now? That's scary.

I remember kids in high school that got "engaged." None of them ever got married. The only couple that actually got married before we graduated (oops) got a divorce two years later. Don't take it too seriously. As annoying as it probably is, it will pass.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

It is not clear to me if both the parents and the judge have to approve, but that is what it appears. It would seem under 16 need both parent and judge. 17-18, just parent.

Here is the actual statute:

Marriage of minors “(a) No license may be issued to any applicant under sixteen years of age, unless the judge of probate for the district in which the minor resides endorses his written consent on the license. (b) No license may be issued to any applicant under eighteen years of age, unless the written consent of a parent or guardian of the person of such minor, signed and acknowledged before a person authorized to take acknowledgments of conveyances under the provisions of section 47-5a, or authorized to take acknowledgments in any other state or country, is filed with the registrar. If no parent or guardian of the person of such minor is a resident of the United States, the written consent of the judge of probate for the district in which the minor resides, endorsed on the license, shall be sufficient.” [Emphasis added]

I really wouldn't think anything of it. Let them go on.

When I was fourteen, my nineteen year old boyfriend and I decided to marry, and blah blah blah, it happens with many, MANY high school relationships. They'll fall apart sooner or later.

I'm sort of thinking that...and hoping that. Not to go off on a tangent but in sociology we are studying love and what makes us 'in love.' Obviously it's complicated and at age 14- and even 17...there isn't much (if at all) a true/complete/realistic concept of love.

This probably won't do anything but tell them that more than 50% of married couples are now divorced.

The only advice I can give you is to stand back and let them see what a bad decision it is on their ownl; because unless you have unearthly conviction and eloquence, convincing a 14 or 17 year old that they're making a dumb decision is like trying to convince Nicole Ritchie to eat a sandwich.

What's up with all these 17 and 19 year-olds dating much younger people? When I was in school, it was looked down upon to date anyone outside of your own grade, and a high school student dating a middle school aged person would've been considered downright creepy.
